"Air Aces" on Military Channel 08/04/13

Looks like an interesting show; Douglas Bader's story can never be told enough times.

Personally, I think Saburo Sakai's return flight from Guadalcanal to Rabaul on 8/7/42 would make a great story line for this show...

:salute:

Agreed. What an amazing bit of airmanship that was.

Some preview videos available here starting with Lt. Col Alexander Jefferson being shot down over German territory...

Finally got around to seeing this specific episode last night.
What struck me about Jefferson's POW experience was the dossier that Germany had on him & all the other POWs.

They were more famous in Germany than in the USA!

It wasn't just on him. The Germans had detailed dossiers on many of our USAAF officers, especially the pilots. Even more data on the RAF pilots. It is a very sad situation when you have your cover story all ready to go, and the interrogation officer on the other side of the table plops down a thick binder, opens it up, and knows everything about your career, with plenty of matching photos to go with it. It's almost a matter of wondering what questions they would even want to ask! They already know everything!

Excellent idea! Yes, Sakai's epic flight would be a tremendous episode. He would be the best person to do a show on to show the Japanese perspectives as his story went across the entire war, and he's one of the very few to have seen it all.

His wife died of starvation after the war ended and that was most sad. It amazed me how much he dedicated his life to peace after the war and how sincerely friendly and admiring he became of the US. His daughter (only child) married an American Army officer. He certainly pulled no punches on criticizing the emperor!
