Seems like management strikes again. I guess the pilot was just this side of invoking that "in command" and responsible for the safety for all concerned, etc versus probably getting fired for doing the right thing.
Reminds me of a friend I once knew years ago who worked for NWA. She had the gruesome position of being the "Company" rep onboard flights. Her job was to see that company policy (likely scripted by bean counters in cubes) was enforced, often pitting her against a Captain (likely a veteran pilot who was merely responsible for the safety of the passengers, crew, and aircraft) as well as the flight crew.
Cynical? Me? No, just experienced.
