Aleutians Scenery

Yup, thanks for your input Smilo......the book was terrific. To read about the ground war alone gives a fella a true perpective of the conditions there, from both sides. Flying was a whole 'nuther smoke', so to speak. I was born and raised up north and I can definitely relate.

Mistah Reid.....I have no idea how or if it can even be done......turning snow on or off through the config file but the scenery for that area is built with snow at the higher elevations. Bluidy fantastic though, eh? As I flew on my initial heading I could see nothing....then the mountains started to appear.....WOW!

There are definite possibilities for a Canadian Campaign there. I went down to the Hamilton Library yesterday to search for some Aleutians stuff. I came up with a great book about Canada in the Aleutians, written in '44, and jealously guarded by the Library. Unfortunately it's not available for loan, so if a guy wants to read the book, he either has to bring his lunch and sleeping bag to the Library, or try and buy it privately.

I've found a few WWII photos of the area and they certainly give the ambience of that time, though there doesn't seem to be much available. Talk about a 'forgotten war'!

First Steps to Tokyo: The Royal Canadian Air Force in the Aleutians by F/O D.F. Griffin.

An American campaign is a must and a Canadian one also. In talking to the experts here, I've been told that the biggest part of Campaign building is the research.....takes a lotta time and effort, but has to be done before anything else.

This area is begging to be done. So far, in my own case, I've only scratched the surface. Once there are airfields done by our Gurus, I think the inspiration will be there for guys to jump in and produce something truly different and memorable for this sim.

Cheers!

Hi Alpha and ys i have had the thousand mile war for years now, even corresponded with the author some years ago....the aleutians campaign has fascniated me for years for the strange things that happened up there, they built a large base or were building it at the end of the war, barracks, mess halls, theater, airfields, etc....well, when the war ended they were about 1/2 way done. They just kept on working on it, and finished it and then tore down part and left part. Walked away. F Beam Piper wrote a great sci fi book called the Cosmic Computer it was set in the future but it was based on the Alaska mlitary district and what was left up there just sitting there after the war, tons of equipment and planes and armor, and more. Remarkable tales.

I dont have the skills or time to do custom textures but if someone does a set of them for the Alaska area i will be very happy to try them out and include them in any campaigns that i can put together, i hope to do both naval (there was one notable engagment with a large Japanese cruiser force) and US raids on the Japanese held islands, they used PBYs as dive bombers and went thru a lot of them..... see what time and energy allow.

CG.....If you scroll down to the 'Landscape and Architects' forum and go into the Aleutians Scenery' thread there, you'll find the required Aleutians files made by Rhumbaflappy. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only place that they've been posted.

First things first. you should put in a clean install with the DEM5, 7, & 8, and the dem4km.bgl files; then put these Aleutian files in. After that you can add dvslats' cfs2 enhanced textures, and UT's textures as well. The last thing I put in was Xb's New Japan scenery, which includes the Kiska airbase.

To make sure you get things right, you should follow Rami's guide for installing scenery, either his ETO or MTO.....it doesn't matter, the basics are the same. only up to and including DEM8.

If you need any help finding links or files, let me know and I'll give you the links. I've included my own scenery.cfg file for my Aleutians install to help guide you along.

Good luck!

Big G; I am just about to install Xavier's Japan stuff. Under requirements 3.1, mesh terrain; do we still do this? I followed the order you have suggested.

If yes, I might have to get back to ya latter, if the links for this requirement are gone. I am going to look for them now, can't wait to take a look at it, got my fingers crossed!:salute::ernae:

YUP....

Hi Rick......I have no idea how to 'turn on' the snow. Rhumba tells me the only way is to do winter textures is in a separate install and I defer to him on that. I think what UT has done is to enhance existing textures. Remember, there's still snow up there year round at some of the higher elevations and, I think, closer to the mainland. I looked at the area using Google Earth, and the only places with snow are closer to Alaska itself.

As far as other meshes expressly for Japan, I didn't put any in. If you follow my scenery.cfg file setup, you shouldn't have any problems. I don't plan on expanding my Aleutians install anywhere else so didn't try the other meshes. I think they'll cause problems in the Aleutians, though I could be wrong, 'cause I haven't tried them.

It might be an idea to try them if you want to, because you might want the Kuriles for the future. They do tie in with the Aleutians re: the actual campaign a bit. A guy'd only use the Kuriles, though if he was flying the Japanese side of any campaign.

If you DO try them and you don't like what you see, they're easy to remove from your scenery library.

Good luck, my friend. Let me know how you've made out please, Rick

Thanks, I will try it out in the AM. I already screwed the pouch first time. Not that surprising for me!:ernae:

Lemme know....

It could end up bein' the blind leading the blind, but if I can help, give me a holler, MR.

Hi,
Saw the word Aleutians and had to see what was going on. I was stationed out towards the end of the chain on Shemya in the late '60s. Another book that you would find interesting is "The Aleutian Warriors"

You should definitely watch the wartime documentary done by John Huston "Report from the Aleutians" if you haven't already. It'll give you an idea of how miserable and deadly conditions could be even during the periods of "good" weather. It's available for download here http://www.archive.org/details/ReportFromTheAleutians .

Here are some shots of Shemya taken while I was based there.

The island in the distance in the second photo is Attu, which has peaks of almost 3,000 feet. Shemya tops out at 200-300 feet. Shemya had 2 airfields, one built for B-29s and the other, smaller one for P-38s.

I'll second that. This book is packed with good quality photographs and maps/plans of the main bases and locations in addition to the fascinating account of the war there.

Cheers

Shemya eh? ASA?

Can you give me a summary of what to load and how to get the best set up for the Aleutians?

I would like to start making some of the ports and camps but need to get the scenery installed as well as it can be done first. I will use Rhumbas mesh...so hopefully things will fit it. I have the records and layouts of the major bases and hope to get a set of GSLs for them when i get my workshop going. thanks.

CrisGer

It's still a WIP.

Alpha 1 started it all by looking at the "old" Aleutians scenery & deciding it needed redoing.

Dick provided a base scenery with landclass & waterclass - look for the thread in landscapers forum to get it.

UT,

Love the P-40s. I was thinking about doing the Green/Earth scheme, as I've already done the green (P-40K) version, but yours looks much better than mine, so I won't worry about it. You'll make our Canadian Brethren very happy.

Wow!......

Verrrry nice, Uncle! Happy indeed!

That book 'Aleutians Warriors'......gotta see if I can find that.

OK< i will look for the landclass and waterclass thanks.... do they include the textures we see mentioned in the thread here?

PS...i looked in the landscape forum on this site and there were only four threads and none were on the Aleutians scenery...is it somewhere else? thanks...i would really like to contribute some sceneries to the area as i have some Aleutians campaigns that i am doing but need the japanese and US facilities on the islands to do it...but to do it right so others can enjoy it i need to be able to get the best land layout possible. thanks.

If you can share even the basic steps, add ons you mentioned in the early posts in this thread it will help a lot.Working together we can achieve a lot. I am thinking from re reading this that Rhumba's Aleutians is the base? if this is correct i will start with that..and wait to see the texture packs you release if it is not ready yet.

Hey Gord, I looked in the Can. Amazon. It's 46 bucks. There's another called "The Forgotten Warriors of the Aleutians Campaign" and that's 130 bucks! A pretty penny to pay for used paperbacks! Must be collector items.:ernae:

"The Aleutian Warriors" is a must have if you're really interested in the air war up there. Snap up those used copies on Amazon; at that price, they're a bargain. There's also an excellent overall view series on the war in Alaska called "The Forgotten War" by Stan Cohen, which has numerous excellent photos of the people and places. These are also large format paperbacks and usually reasonably priced. The series runs to 4 volumes and covers Alaska and northwestern Canada.
