All my laptop installs have gone kaput!

On Win7 I remove or rename the GameUX.dll in C:Windows/SysWOW64 and C:Windows/System32 and this killed Games Explorer and its phone home BS.

Rince33,

Your fix suggestion worked beautifully. Thanks for the tip, I never would have known had I not responded! :encouragement:

Brilliant insight I am sure and would love to try the fix. Except Windows will not let me as sysAdmin on Win7 Home Premium make any changes to dll files in those Windows directories. Sole permission is given to "Trusted Installer" which does not exist on my machine. I know this is off-topic, but how do I override this? Windows help is not much help; "If this button is unavailable, you might not have permission to modify any security settings." Tried doing so at the parent folder level and all dll access was denied. Let's see now, how do you guys phrase this....:banghead:

On Windows 7 the Trusted Installer runs when I first power up the machine. It seems to be tied in with CVHSVC.exe and the Windows Update procedure. Normally, it will run for about a minute when viewed on the Process Explorer and if there are no updates for Windows, it will shut off. After about a minute the Trusted Installer will terminate. If you are getting Windows Update for Win7, the Trusted Installer is there.

Also, consider getting the "Process Explorer", if you don't already have it. Me thinks this link will get you there: www.sysinternals.com/ProcessExplorer.

Again, I toast the wisdom of the crowd. Thank you.

I was able to change permissions on the offending DLL and rename it by changing ownership from 'Trusted Installer' to the SysAdmin per this document:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...to-files/5203914d-9357-4b71-a4c5-a2d11d392fff

That did indeed kill rundll32, and these findings should probably be put in an FAQ someplace for future reference.

However, I am still getting an appcrash related to something else (FS9 also fails to start) and probably done trying. This is precisely why my business life is all conducted on Linux.

Jcoke,

Great on CFS2, perhaps FS9 contributors to this thread can help with the latter sim. :applause:

I put the info about how to kill Games Explorer in the Windows 10 snafu / content thread a year ago. (June 22nd, 2018)

Problem solved thanks to all your help. Thanks to all for the advice. Ran the .bat file and changed the problem .dll and problems went away with CFS2 and CFS3 installs. Funny thing is my IL-2'46 installs and other sims never had any problems. Why did this happen all of a sudden/now after all these years. See that i show no recent updates. A real mystery.:dizzy:Running Win 7 Home 64bit .Regards,Scott

I have no idea what causes Games Explorer to wake up. I never had any problem tell I installed Starcraft than it came alive on my laptop. I don't remember problems with Games Explorer and CFS2 before that with my laptop. On my Tower Games Explorer was a problem soon as I no longer had internet for it.

Makes me think some games cause Games Explorer to wake up and do bad things.
