alphasim F-4 phantom pack II

Not bitching about anything here... just wanted to comment that I sure would like to see that RF-4B photo bird version included in any future AlphaSim F-4 packs. I'm not a big Phantom Phan but I would like to have the picture-takin' bird and the standard F-4B too. :)

I can't remember exactly which of them had the RF versions (either set 2 or 3?) but they were included.
:kilroy:

The RF-4 models were included in Pack 3 - and some extra bonus models were included in the paint kit.
The standard F-4B was a part of Pack 1 (USN/USMC).

That will not be an issue when Mark remakes them. They will most likely use the same system of having all external loads available for all models as he did with the Mirage III/5 series (except those not historically correct -- I'll push hard on that). Or he could just give them all wings tanks and inner pylons and be done with it -- that's certainly historically accurate. Not very interesting though. Along side the Mirage, the F-4 is my favorite so I'll make all 40 years of research materials I have available to help get it right.

As I said I don't mean to bitch about it, the man clearly has more talent than I at producing FS models! ;)

I was at Wattisham between 1989 and 1993, and as you rightly point out, the standard day to day FGR.2 loadout was two fletcher tanks and the AIM-9 pylons/rails. This is a good loadout for FS as it's a non-combat sim anyway!

The F-4J(UK) standard loadout was different though, carrying just a centreline tank along with the usual inner wing pylons/rails. The fletchers were generally only carried for detachments to Cyprus, Deci etc, though very occasionally they were carried at other times. The F-4J(UK) stencils will need looking at too as they were non-standard markings applied at San Diego in 1984, and were the same colour as the undersides. The only exceptions were Q, O, and R which by 1988 had all gone through major overhaul at RAF St Athans, so along with standard RAF Barley grey paint, they had standard FGR.2 stencilling applied too.

As I remember, UK QRA loadouts rarely saw the gun attached. As the Phantom was a fuel hog, the centreline tanks were often fitted instead. I'm sure Dave H can correct me if I'm wrong!

The Falklands FGR.2's nearly always operated with a full live weapons fit (yellow banding on the missiles) including the Suu-23 cannon pod.

You're pretty safe going for the standard day to day fit, full weapons with gun, full weapons with centre tank, and an APC loadout of inner pylons/rails and the gun. I think those would cover all the bases. :)

The other item that needs addressing is the HUD. The Phantom had a steam driven cockpit, so the HUD was extremely basic. Cloud 9 got this absolutely spot on, as it's nothing more than a simple "pipper". Our pilots would've dreamed of having the complex spread of information seen on the Alpha FGR.2/F-4J(UK) HUD! :icon_lol:

The overall model looks great though, and seems to be slightly more accurate than the IRIS version, so if these issues could be addressed then I'll definately have one, especially as there's a nice Phantom era Wattisham scenery coming along in the future, and Akrotiri too! :jump:

Here the corrected 1988 Tiger Meet jet, the standard squadron markings on the fwd fuselage have been applied, and the ejection warning triangles etc are the proper grey colour rather than red/white. The aircraft flew out to Cameri in Italy in 1988 for the annual Tiger Meet, and the immulsion paint for the tiger artwork on the nose and tail was obtained locally and painted on in Italy by 74's ground crews. Sadly the artwork never made it back to the UK as it was washed off in a rain storm on the way home. :(

No HUD in my F-4s. I even have the CIVA INAS installed in the FGR.2 - the FG.1 had a 'clockwork' monstrosity that's best overlooked.

This one, perhaps?

Yes, that's the one. I never got a good look at the AlphaSim RF-4B until Tranquil did the VMFP-3 Bicentennial repaint for it at the end of April. I did the Globe & Anchor shield for the tail.

Well, I was going through the 3 or 4 pages of purchases I had made via AlphaSim last evening, looking for ones I had lost in the HD crash a few months ago and came across the Phantom Pack 2. I didn't realize I had even bought that one (it was two years ago and I've slept since then, lol). Anyway, I had 1 remaining download available for that airplane and I was able to download it and save it. I'm flying the Cloud9 Phantom right now, but at least if that one decides to tank on me (which it could based on past experiences with the addon manager) I'll still have the reliable AlphaSim Phantom.

hi falcon

check out my album of the museum i volinteered at
it is march field museum. MARCH A.F.B. Calif
i have the album set for public i think i did it ok iam new here let me know wat u think.

I still laugh at the stories of the FGR.2s not being able to get off US Carrirs at full load 'cos the engines were closer together and hotter and started to melt the decks when at full reheat....

...ah, the Spey engined Toom, loverly jubberly. Most powerful, yes, but slowest too, that musta sucked when they found that out in testing, lol. Linking into the pics above, doesn't the Sluf have a licensed built Spey, non-reheat like the Bucc? Speaking of nanas, love them a bit more than the toom I'm affraid, specially in blue and white early RN. Heck, even the Shars looked good in that (the following scheme was more mean and moody though).

Yep. Most powerful, slowest, fattest.....

The FGR.2 wasn't flight deck-friendly. She could probably land well enough on a deck, but takeoff was a no-no, as all the naval equipment had been removed/disabled. The FG.1 had the slatted tailplane (stabilator) of the naval versions, but the FGR.2 had a plain one.

The F-4N is not represented in the payware Pack 1 either. I tweaked the config file and can use the F-4C or F-4D repaints using the "B" model. These were very similar externally. I also tweaked the flap config so that there are only 2 settings, half and full. The leading edge on the B,N and J versions fully deployed when flaps were selected. I was fortunate enough to work on the N, S and RF-4B variants. I've attached a repaint screenshot from VMFA-321 in 1984.
