AlphaSim F-8 Crusaders and FSX thumbnails

One of my favorites of course and delta_lima , If memory serves me right , before the Crusader came out I had a thread on AlphaSim's old forum they use to have wishing they could include VMF(AW)-235 ("Death Angels") textures and they did . It even had my name below the canopy . Didn't you have something to do with that ? If you did , I sincerely thank you for that . It was very thoughtful . VMF 235 was my old unit in Iwakuni , Japan and Danang , RVN . Here is a couple of pics and you would typically see quite a few of the F8's noses hanging out of the tall metal revetments . Scenery is from the "Vietnam War Project" that came out earlier this year by Jacques Godfrin and Xavier Carrie. I don't know how well you would like flying in the 60's era in SE Asia but the scenery comes highly recommended and it is an ongoing project . The F8 flies pretty well in FSX but it is a beast to get stopped .

You know, I had forgotten your "commissioning", (as it were), Rich! I was only the lowly technical souce and QC tester on that project, and was happy to propose that small gesture to the developer (Carl). That after so many years, this plane continues to bring us all so much enjoyment made all the rivet counting worthwhile. I look forward to one day buying PSP - and taking a course - to some repainting on my own. Would love to give back to the community in more tangible ways than merely offering my tech refs and eyeballs ... :)

now, back to the Cru ...

Would be great if people would do some more paints, though I do enjoy the ones done by Russ Smith and Mickey Jahn. I am a real plonker of a painter and use a combo of MS Paint and Gimp. Am mid-way through doing up one VF-191, mostly from canabalizing other paints and touch ups here and there.

The other issue I would like to hear more on is getting the RF-8 model to appear correctly in FSX. I have posted on this here again recently. I definately have the right model - understand everyone will not and why - it is a smaller size than the default F8-E model and I have checked my cfg entries a dozen times: if anyone can get the RF-8 - really a "Clean F8-E" model to appear correctly, ie. without reflecting AIM-9's showing, please post here.

There was an unauthorized revised model file that eliminated the ordinance...I'll look around and see if I still have it.

Update...I have it but it does not work in FSX. All you get are 2 invisible outlines where the missles used to be...sorry

Seeing this ol' gal again reminds me how good it would be to have a brand new FSX version.

It is a cool plane. Here's my fave paint job.

OK Mitch, that is the confirmation I was looking for - thanks.

Looks like this. Wonder if there is some way to tweak the alpha channel on the texture to make the outline disappear in FSX? No such problems testing it in FS9, i.e. worked fine there.

Cheers!

I queried this the other day and have been informed it's a model/materials attributes issue and cannot be sorted in FSX.

Bummer, was hoping against hope ... I'm with Ex, the RF-8 is such a lovely model. I begged and pleaded with Carl to do an R ... but alas. Hey, the glass is still half full. At least most of the models appear to work well. Unlike the other love of my life, the Sea Fury ... :(

Bone, that's a great shot of those 5 VF-84 "C"s - well done!
