AlphaSim FS9 Phantom packs now freeware

fsafranek

SOH-CM-2024
Just to let everyone know (who still has FS9 installed) that Phil has put up the three AlphaSim FS9 Phantom packs as freeware. They have been zipped up into a single 95MB Virtavia .msi installer and will appear as Virtavia models once installed. Sounds are included.

Many thanks to Mark Harper for allowing this so these can get out to the public again.

Thanks for the info !
If I remember correctly, only the first pack was problematic in FSX, the later two packs worked more or less ok, right ?

I tried it into FSX Acceleration.
The aircrafts in Volume 1 have a display problem in the virtual cockpit. I deleted them.
The aircrafts in Volume 2 and 3 are displaying properly :)
There are 3 to 4 gauges that are incompatible with FSX, the rest is working ok.
The plane can land on the Nimitz, the arrestor hook works, but the launch bar is not defined, so the launch assistance has to be added into the aircraft.cfg.
There seems to be a deep FPS impact in the external view, but that might be simply due to effects, I didn't check yet.

Can set 1 be made to work with FSX, with Accel? And if not, would the repaints for Volume 1 work with 2 or 3? Such a shame if not. So many wonderful repaints available.

I can remember how excited I was when I bought this one for FS9 - one of my early payware purchases.

I have been a frequent user of the Pack 1 USN/USMC AS Rhino's in FSX and just this week have been setting up some USMC ai to go with the USMC Phantoms at MCAS Beaufort. Looks fantastic with some of the 32bit and other great repaints out there.

Main problem, as mentioned, is the Pack1 VC textures not appearing and seeing through the panel and floor at the ground below. There are so many "plusses" with this a/c for me I don't mind that much but would be great to find a solution. Problem of course is, unlike FSX native models, you can't swap an FS9 VC that has problems for one that will work in FSX. Not sure if the Pack 2/3 models are accurate for F-4B/J purposes or if the skins will fit.

There is also some gauge swapping necessary - which is the usual routine - though if anyone can isolate the "Tornado RAD" gauge that gives me two pairs of warning messages I'd be grateful as I can't see them in the gauge list. The offending file may be an embedded bitmap in gauge with a different looking name - or something like that.

I am having those same problems with Pack 2. Have not tried Pack 3 yet. Is that the only issue with Pack 1? If so, I can live with that!

OK, here we go!

Pack No. 02; Model.1 and no VC texture problems. Just need to swap some older gauges and you can use your F-4B/J USN/USMC paints.

As has been reported, Pack 2 models C and D show up quite well, only needing some new gauges.

There is one spot in the lower VC that has a missing texture.

It also appears as though a few models in Pack 3 are fully funtional as well.

The FGR.1, FGR.2, RF-4C, F.Mk.3, F-4J (UK) RF-4E Clean, and more do appear to function properly in FSX.

It is great to have the Rhino back in FSX!

I will never forget my first back seat ride in a Phantom. May 14, 1974. F-4J, BUNO 153088, at NATC Patuxent River, MD.

I'd worked on Phantoms for about a year at that point, as an AME (Egress mech) I completed all the requirements for back seaters: Pressure chamber, swim test, flight physical, and egress training.

The Plane Captain strapped me in, and when those engines turned up, the vibrations alone were powerful.

The pilot taxied to the runway. Back then, they would throttle up each engine separately, and back to idle before takeoff. The entire aircraft would rumble!

I will never forget the feeling of the afterburners lighting off. I could feel it against my back. Unbelievable feeling of power!!!

The wheels left the ground, and instantly I could feel the g-forces pushing me down in my ejection seat.

That first ride was 1.4 hours. Following that, I was fortunate to ride 5 more times: Once in F-4J 153071, once in F-4B 152298, and three times in a former Blue Angel F-4J 153839.

The Phantom was an awesome aircraft. Power, raw power, and FAST!

GO NAVAIR!

Great screenies there Mal, particularly the smokin' cloud!

Navy Chief, great to hear your recollection of what the ride was like - good stuff.

[TailHook]

tailhook_position = -20, 0, -2.2

note: you may try adding this to your cfg. You may not need the tailhook entry as it is probably already there.

hoping this is helpful

Thank you SO much, shipmate! That worked perfectly! And you were correct, the Tailhook entry was already there!

Now then, with regards to changing out textures, gauges, etc.... Have you done this to fix the transparency problems in the VC, and gauge compatibility issues? If so, could you (or anyone who might have done this) share the fixes?

Thanks in advance!

This is awesome!

Glad to hear it, you are welcome, anywhere anytime.

As far as I know, the 2004 paints work perfectly. There are a lot of them. Most very hi-viz.

As for the VC or 2D panel I must check, retrace my steps, as it has been perhaps even 3 years since I tried a thing or two on the Navy/Marine F-4 package. I'm certain there are ----or were---several updates of various kinds that could be downloaded and some quite recently. A search should produce results.

I'll get back ASAP but real life demands my time so gimme a bit. But others readers must know more than I do. Together we'll get results. Gotta go do the chores.

Howdy,
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
The F-4 panels are all fixable. What we have here is another FSX texture transparency handling issue. Now I know that is a total surprise to everyone, but luckily this one is very easy to fix. This only fixes the backgrounds, not the gauges.
<o:p></o:p>
To fix Package 1:<o:p></o:p>
1. Back up your panel.cfg in case you don’t like the fix
2. Open the panel.cfg file<o:p></o:p>
3. Add the following lines:<o:p></o:p>
Under Vcockpit02
<o:p></o:p>
file=PanelFix1.bmp
<o:p></o:p>
and under Vcockpit03
<o:p></o:p>
file=RadarFix1.bmp
<o:p></o:p>
4. Paste the following .bmp files into the panel folder, making sure the name is “PanelFix1.bmp, and RadarFix1.bmp”and size is 1024x1024

That’s it,<o:p></o:p>
They should look like normal. The bleed through on the package 2 instrument bezels is from the color depth conversions, if I get some time I will see about fixing that.<o:p></o:p>
Now if anyone can ever figure out the FSX concord visor issue, both the Crusader and Phantom’s refueling probe will work too. But that’s another issue.<o:p></o:p>
Oh Yeah, if you have the new (not freeware) Alphasim F-105, the ADI and HIS look GREAT in the Phantom!<o:p></o:p>

Dan,

Thanks so much, and sounds easy enough. Maybe a dumb question, but where is the
PanelFix.bmp file located? Is it already part of the files somewhere, or do I download it?

Thanks.

NC

I was hoping the files in the post would be useable with a simple "save as" but I just tried it and it doesn't work out very well. You can use them, but they turn out very pixilated. I will work on assembling a fix file for upload this week.
