Alphasim have updated their A-3 Skywarrior.

New update package added to the USA section - the A-3 Skywarrior ! AlphaSim's 2005 release of the Skywarrior was long overdue for a makeover, so here is an extensive updated package for this versatile US Navy Cold War jet. Please note - this is NOT a new release as such, we have taken the 2005 model and improved and extended it in many ways, but the essential 'style' is still 2003 FS2004 and should not be confused with all-new FSX releases. The very favourable pricing of this large model package reflects this.
Here's the package in full :
SIX model variants : A-3B, EA-3B, KA-3B, RA-3B, EKA-3B and ERA-3B
THIRTEEN texture sets : yes, 13 ! All by Pierre Lheureux and very detailed
Soundset now included
V-C is unchanged from 2005 version, but gauges are now direct-mapped so no gauge 'floating'
Crew are now togglable
Leading edge slats now operate automatically, distinct from flaps
KA models have extendable refuelling hose
Improved v-c glazing textures
New cockpit overhead escape hatch
Wing spoilers now correctly animated as spoilerons
V-C now includes all external model parts which would be visible
Automatic smoke and wingtip vortex FX
Tailhook lever in v-c now mousable

For FS2004 only. Filesize : 44MB
Price : approx. $20 USD, £13.50, 15 EUR, 28.50 AUD

I'm really glad that alphasim has updated the whale model. But I'm kind of disappointed with the update. The model is good, but the gauge package should have been updated. The fuel, crew weights, engine thrust settings and flap position settings should have been better.

So here is a revised cfg reflecting the proper settings. These were all obtained from the Navy Historical Branch records. Just cut and paste:

I've also updated the panel using the B-66 gauges. I think that this is the product that should have been delivered. In my opinion, after buying this product that alphasim fell short of their usual good product.

I'm really glad that alphasim has updated the whale model. But I'm kind of disappointed with the update. The model is good, but the gauge package should have been updated. The fuel, crew weights, engine thrust settings and flap position settings should have been better.

...

I've also updated the panel using the B-66 gauges. I think that this is the product that should have been delivered. In my opinion, after buying this product that alphasim fell short of their usual good product.

Thank you for posting your mods!

There were some very unfortunate manpower issues with this one, specifically medical and related to our guy who did (or does, hard to know) the FS9 effects and glass gauges, so that it was almost shelved indefinitely. There are images in the beta site with a glassy gauge set in place. But that is as much as any of us saw.

Your revised panel looks great. Would you mind posting your panel.cfg changes as well for those of us who do have both aircraft and still do fly in FS9 on occasion? It would be much appreciated.
:ernae:

Sorry to hear of the problems incurred while developing the update. Here are the instructions for the panel update. First copy both the A-3 and B-66 CAB files from the panel folders to the main Gauges folder in FS9. Then copy the electric panel bitmap from the B-66 panel folder to the A-3 panel folder. And last, here is the revised panel cfg:

Have fun! John

Nice airplane. Nice of you guys to paint an aircraft in which I have actually flown, though you have it in the VAP-62 camo and not the VQ-1 1973 version of the RA-3B.

The fuel tankage is clearly a mistake. The B-66 numbers don't match the Navy numbers exactly, but look pretty close.

Frankly, I would have preferred the weights, seven crew members and three tank configuration of the EA-3B. Those 45,000 lb empty weight EA-3's we had in VQ-1 were a handful for the pilots on carrier landings.

"The fuel tankage is clearly a mistake. The B-66 numbers don't match the Navy numbers exactly, but look pretty close."

That's pretty funny considering that I got those figures from the NATOPS manual excerpts posted on the A-3 Skywarrior Association's web page.

"The fuel tankage is clearly a mistake. The B-66 numbers don't match the Navy numbers exactly, but look pretty close."

That's pretty funny considering that I got those figures from the NATOPS manual excerpts posted on the A-3 Skywarrior Association's web page.

I came up with similar numbers to johndetrick during beta testing but they didn't make it into the final build.
This was based on one our testers making this comment:

There have been a number of instances where P-3's and A-3's raced each other from Barbers Point, Oahu to the San Francisco Bay area (NAS Moffett Field for the P-3's and NAS Alameda from the Whale's). On a long distance like that the A-3's had to pull their power back to conserve fuel burn, but the P-3's could go the distance with nearly full power. The speed differential was so close that the race could easily be decided by the routing that you got into your home field, or the difference between winds aloft at the different altitudes.

My conclusion was that if the aircraft was 3200 gallons short we're going to be ditching (or calling for help) out over the Pacific. So I made this suggestion:
Code:
[Fuel]
fuel_type = 2
number_of_tank_selectors = 1
electric_pump = 1

// Long (ft), Lat (ft), Vert (ft), Usable (gallons), Unusable (gallons)
LeftMain = 6, -10, 3, 649, 1
RightMain = 6, 10, 3, 649, 1
// Center1 = 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 3348, 6   // * all fuselage fuel in single tank at fuselage CG
Center1 = 7.0, 0, 0, 1834, 3
Center2 = -4.0, 0, 0, 1514, 3

Capacities above are based on the manual. Capacity of single fuselage tank was derived by averaging the values.
EA-3B: Wings = 1298, Forward Cell = 1814, AFT Cell = 1760, TOTAL = 4872 Usable (5099 total volume)
EKA-3B: Wings = 1298, Forward Cell = 1214, AFT Cell = 1909, TOTAL = 4421 Usable (4489 total volume)
1814 + 1214 / 2 = 1514
1760 + 1909 / 2 = 1834
1514 + 1834 = 3348

Tank positions are based on eyeballing the image in the manual we have. Forward fuselage tank (Center1) looks to be in line with back half of wing and Aft fuselage tank (Center2) looks to be centered between main gear. If there is no fuel management system it may be better to go with a single fuselage tank (option commented out above).

I was looking at this document - http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/SAC/A-3A_SkywarriorSAC-670701.pdf

649 in each wing tank
1178 forward tank
1909 aft tank
4,385 total gallons

The B-66 model has 4,410 total gallons

John's mod has 4,412 total gallons

Now it has been 36+ years, and I only helped fuel A-3's about a half-dozen times while in VQ-1. And we only lost one aircraft in Sept 73 due to fuel starvation.

I do remember some of quite a heated discussion in the squadron ops office trying to figure out what was the exact unusable fuel in the A-3 before the crew bailed out.

I did not participate in any of the defueling of A-3 aircraft before we brought them into the hanger for major work, though I remember complaints about getting all the fuel out of the aft tank for the four RA-3B aircraft VQ-1 received in late 72/ early 73.

I seem to remember that the wing tanks were almost completely usable fuel - less than a gallon unusable.

Most of the unusable fuel was in the aft tank especially the part that drooped forward of the wheels up against the back of the ECM operator compartment. I did have to crawl into the aft 'hell hole' several times and check the aft tank bladder along with help remove modules for the radar system. At that time I was probably 70-80 pounds lighter than now and quite skinny. One of the guys that I rented a home with in Dededo was an A-3 plane captain and pretty small also, but another roommate was an AQ-2 and hefty. Too hefty to get in that space.

But the differences are minor not worth tweaking.

I do have a concern if anyone wants to run this aircraft in the MSFS RTW Race. We don't allow modifications to flight dynamics and fuel capacities in most cases. We normally require that the aircraft designer either issue a changed flight dynamic, or that an established designer submit a modified .AIR file, aircraft.cfg file and source documentation for testing.

In the case of this aircraft, if AlphaSim said the B-66 aircraft.cfg was more accurate, then we would allow that verision of the aircraft.cfg to be used in the race.

Edit - I believe this is the KA tank configuration because our EA, RA and TA aircraft in VQ-1 used the fuselage back to the end of the wings.

If any FSX fans stumble in here, Alphasim has ported over the A-3.

Now available for FSX - the A-3 Skywarrior ! The Skywarrior package has ported over to FSX well, so we decided to make it available. Note, as an FS9-to-FSX portover, there are no FSX special features such as bump mapping or self-shadowing. However it does look good and flies well. Existing owners of the new v.2 package just need to log in to their account area and they can download the FSX version.

Question for Frank

Frank,

Just picked this up and love it! My question: Will the earlier version repaints work on this? I noted no paint kit when I D/L'ed the new one. Hopefully the new bits are on there own textures. Hope to hear from you soon!
