Greetings fellow flight simmers! My name is Todd Connelly, I'm an auto mechanic from Sandy Oregon USA. Been involved with flight sims for a long time. Starting with CFS1 and 2, then IL2, Mig alley, BoB, EECH, FS20004 and most recently with BoB II WoV. (As well as Grand Prix legends on the racing side) I recently got CFS3 from the bargain bin with an eye toward getting involved with OFF. But after researching it in more depth I realized that my tired old machine wasn't going to get it done. So CFS3 sat for almost a year. Now with winter coming on I decided to give ETO and some of the other great add ons a shot. So here I am. I hope to be able to contribute to the group in some meaningful way soon. But at the moment I know almost nothing about CFS3 so I'm wearing out the search function :) .

Welcome to the CFS3 world, once you have CFS3 loaded and set up with the 3.1 patch, you should be ready to load ETO..
There are many Masters here to help out if you have questions..
A good bunch of folks if I do say so..

First of all, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/Games/combatfs3/

You will need the 3.1 and 3.1a Updates.

It might also be a good idea to grab the Mission Builder while you're at it.

Then go deeper into the site, to here: http://www.microsoft.com/Games/combatfs3/cfs3_sdk.aspx

It's a very good idea to grab the Terrain SDK Public Beta v2.0 while you're there.

Install CFS3 first, then the two Updates, 3.1 and 3.1a. This is a MUST.

The mission Builder and Terrain SDK are completely optional, but you will need the Terrain SDK if you want to modify any global layers down the road.

CFS3 is much more moddable than the other sims you mentioned, as you will soon see.

Cut your teeth on stock CFS3 for a bit at first, to get used to the game engine. Then try the add-on stand-alone theaters, ETO, PTO_Solomons, Korean Skies, BoB, OFF.

You have come to the right place. There is a large number of folks here who are truly experts in all phases of this sim, and are more than willing to help.

This is without doubt the best tech support in the sim, and also the friendliest.

They do keep prodding (gently) to build missions, but I've discovered it ain't as easy as it first seems; these guys really do know what they're doing, which is not something I can yet say. I can say that with the tips and tricks I've learned from them here, I can do a lot more in the way of my own enjoyment of the sim in all its manifestations (ETO, MAW, PTO, DPC and BoB.

The only thing they ask is that you keep it civil, which isn't much to ask.
 
Gents, thanks for the warm welcome. And thanks for the suggestions and tips. So far I have ETO up to 1.20 and the mission builder up and all is working well. I'll refrain from any questions until I get it all updated to 1.40 and dialed in. As many of the outstanding issues I had with the original release have been addressed. It's amazing what the community has been able to accomplish.

Clive thanks, I'll definitely look into BoB as well as MAW, PTO and Korea once I'm up to speed.

I hope to get into some mission building. I used to do quite a bit of it in CFS2 once upon a time.
