An old project brought up to date: Canso PBY-5 of SAGQ

I believe that is Lagaffe's intent to have both models available, which I think is coming soon in one of his revisions. That way we will have both a PBY-5A and a PBY-6A. That is one massive radar on that Danish PBY. I wonder how much radiation the pilots absorbed with the radar on right above their heads? Click on the Google search hyperlink.

    • Not standard on all PBY-5As: Early PBY-5A models did not have the radar dome. The inclusion of radar was a wartime modification, and not all aircraft received the upgrade.

Maybe they learned to duck while the radar was running after the first couple of brain explosion incidents ... :LOL:

The Danish air force used the Catalinas all the way up until 1975, for example in Greenland, where the big radar undoubtedly was nice to have.

Just a heads up to all who like to use the FS2024 flight planner in the EFB, which I use on every cross-country flight, is to edit your panel.cfg file to use the new WorkingTitle Garmin 430/530 version 2 or v2. When you use the Load to avionics it will now load correctly into the Garmin's in the PBY. I just tested this and it worked for me.

You can back up your panel.cfg if you what to before making this change.

[VCockpit04]
size_mm = 320,234
pixel_size = 320,234
texture = $AS530_Screen
htmlgauge00=NavSystems/WTGNSv2/WT530/WT530.html, 0, 0, 320, 234

[VCockpit05]
size_mm = 350,190
pixel_size = 350,190
texture = $AS430_Screen
htmlgauge00=NavSystems/WTGNSv2/WT430/WT430.html, 0,0,350,190

After loading the flight plan and actually flying a flight on the autopilot, it appears that the airplane flys better using the AS 430/530 than the WT. The WT has more functions, but in this case on my system the AS is better. I can load the AS GPS using the PMS750 program. I need to see if I am missing something on how to load a flight plan into the AS GPS. Maybe other forum members can share their experience using each of these GPS systems and the autopilot, but for now it appears on my system the AS GPS is better for the PBY?

I think if you're using the PMS750 in flight, then the PBY will be using that instead of whichever GPS you have configured.
I have the payware PMS750 with autopilot, which works perfectly with the PBY - I find the KAP140 on it's own to be a bit 'hit and miss' with both GPS versions, and it won't follow the heading selector on the panel at all for some reason.
On another note, the round 'Consolidated Aircraft' sticker on the panel behind the pilot's yoke has an 'Anchor' clickspot for use on water - in MSFS2024 this pins the aircraft to the spot and it can't be undone, even in Slew mode!

Not quite accurate ... :cool:

Indeed, if you visit the PBY's front part or inside of the turret, you will find an anchor there (see the picture)
This anchor is currently clickable from the cockpit because there isn’t yet "any protection to prevent it". Soon, via the camera.CFG, there will be a variable that will prevent the anchor from being clickable from the cockpit.

This is due to the fact that in certain situations, the click zones overlap in the viewing angle, such as when you create a mouse zone on the VC and also a mouse zone on the chocks: in some situations you can click on the chocks area from the VC .... which is not realistic :(

To get around this annoying problem, Asobo has planned two possibilities:
- insert an invisible plane between the two areas to prevent in some cases that they appear in front of each other
- but also specific variables located in the camera.CFG which allow these areas to be active only in certain camera views.

The first solution does not seem to work in all cases, the second was the solution that was successfully applied on the Stearman and the Aeronca.
I will set it up soon as possible when I review all the existing cameras (currently, I don't have the time to do it).

To return to the anchor, some PBYs have a hatch between the front of the aircraft and the windshield, this hatch can be opened and one can then click on the anchor to immobilize the aircraft. To render this blockage ineffective, the parking brake must be unlocked from the VC; it's locked as soon as we click on the anchor, ... to be exact, latitude and longitude are freezeed when the aircraft is on the water and then you click on the anchor.

PS: Some PBY don't have this hatch and I will find an other solution.

The version being in WIP, the documentation could not follow but this will be indicated in V1.0.0.

Tiger1962 , I have the payware version too. I commented out the KAP140.

[VCockpit06]
size_mm = 512,105
pixel_size = 512,105
texture = $AS140_Screen
//htmlgauge00 = Generic/Autopilots/KAP140/KAP140.html, 0, 0, 512, 105

Are you using the AS GPS or the WT GPS?

I use the Logitech Multi-panel to control the autopilot. I am 60 miles from LAX. I took off from SFO and so far the PBY as been flying very well, hasn't missed a beat. I am using the AS GPS and did load the flight plan using the PMS750. I found that it flys better without the KAP140.

BTW, thanks for the heads up about the anchor. I didn't know that, but will certainly use it for water operations.

Thank you for the clarification on the Anchor clickspot, @lagaffe - I'll avoid it in future!
@Hollister56 - Don't use this Anchor clickspot for now, it will freeze your position and you'll have to restart the flight to unfreeze it.
I am now testing the KAP140 again (without using the PMS750) having made changes to the ai.cfg, flight_model.cfg and systems.cfg.
I've edited the [STICKANDRUDDER] section of the ai.cfg.
I've edited the weight and balance in the flight_model.cfg to move the CG forward - she was still a bit tail-heavy.
I've changed a couple of the [ELECTRICAL] parameters relating to Avionics, getting a couple of gauges on the same bus and voltage as the Autopilot has helped so far.
One more test flight should confirm the manual and AP handling for MSFS2024 at least, but so far I'm surprised at how delighted I am with this plane - I like amphibs anyway, but wouldn't normally go for one this old.
Once she's loaded out the way she likes, she's rock steady and floats along in cruise like an airship. On a clear day it's glorious. Well done @lagaffe, you're a legend!

Warning with the CG because they are several aircrafts in the addon.
The 2 water-bomber can store up to 4184 kg of water or retardant which greatly alters the aircraft’s balance so the CG for theses aircrafts should take in account this.
When you finished your tests can you send me yours values in order for me to test with the last version compiled today ?

Testing the CTRL+E procedure under MSFS 2024, now I cannot start the engine ???

Hi lagaffe, yes I've been very careful with the CG (I hope!). Starting from Cold and Dark with Ctrl+E is working for me in MSFS2024, I'll PM my files to you now.
