Another "kid" joined the family today

Today, my wife had her weekly "Girls' Day" at her mom's house...eating, playing cards and hanging out with her mom, sisters, aunts. Basically a big Hen Party. She had been there maybe an hour when she called home to inform me that she heard on "The Market Place", a radio call in hour for people with stuff for sale or giving away, etc...that there was a ferret free to a good home. She said it came with a cage. She kept repeating "the price is right, the price is right, the price is right". So, I told her to go ahead and call, find out if the ferret is young, old, male, female, sick, healthy, generally kick the tires as it were.

Turns out the ferret is maybe 2 to 2 and a half years old, a male, fixed, very very social, very cute, and twice the size of the two female ferrets we have.

Needless to say, he is now home with us and will get the kind of care he should have been receiving. He is "healthy", but will get healthier. The original owners were feeding him cat food and hot dogs, using cat litter in his litter pan...all of which are big NO NOs for ferrets. Give him a month or so on the mix of premium ferret foods we use, and daily vitamin supplements and he will be right as rain.

His name is Rascal....which really doesn't fit him as he is a very laid back, gentle, calm critter. My wife held him all the way home and he kept licking my wife's arms, hands, chin, cheek, nose.

So, now our "kids" consists of 2 dog, 3 ferrets, 3 Parakeets, and 4 fish tanks.

Can any of you guess why I call my wife "Noah"? All we need is a big wooden boat and lots of rain...we are set for the next big flood for sure.

Hey OBIO,

That's a GREAT story! I've never been around ferrets, but they sound like nice pets. Congrats on your new addition. I like the "Noah" nickname, lmao!

I married the crazy cat lady. She has four and I have two, we're kinda like the Brady Bunch of cats.

Congrats on the new ferret Obio and I hope he settles in OK.

Ferrets can be a lot of fun but all my experience with them was many years ago in my late teens when I still lived in the UK. Over there they are not considered to be 'pets' like they are in North America but rather they are 'working' animals and are kept in a semi-wild state and can be very aggressive and need careful handling. They are used when hunting rabbits and are put down rabbit holes to drive out the rabbits which are then either trapped in nets or shot with 12 gauge or .410 shotguns.

My GF of the time's brother had one that was very calm and relaxed and he would bring it into the house from time to time to play with the four farm cats. A neighbour had one that was a nasty piece of work and could only be handled when wearing heavy motorcycle gauntlets and even then it managed to bite through the leather into his thumb one day to leave a nasty gash that bled like crazy.

My wife would love a ferret as a pet but our house isn't really 'ferret safe' as such and I'm not sure our two house cats would appreciate one either (although they used to tolerate our Yellow Labrador when she was alive).
