Just to say I've discovered cfs2 following a miracle that happened in Shifnal, Shropshire UK recently.

I'd been wandering around the town doing a bit of xmas shopping, scoffing fish n' chips etc when I saw a shop called the Trading-Post.com, hmmm I'll have a look in there methinks.

Usual stuff until I spot a pristine, un-opened BOX containing cfs2 !! It was brand new and unopened from Ireland!! The old guy serving only wanted 2 quid for it cos he said it was an old game and out of date - I checked inside to make sure it was 2 cd and it was. I reckoned for £2 it was worth it and purchased the game.

Man the web is FULL of stuff for cfs2. I couldn't believe what I've found. Now I've got planes that will probably never be done for il-2.

The maskrider scenery is BRILLIANT. Man those blended airfields are 100 times better than the ones in il-2 that look like they've just landed from outer space. :bump:

Best of all this old game is fun - and the damage effects are brilliant too, much better than cfs3. Those Jap planes really burn the way they did.

I'm having a ball here and building missions left, right and centre too.
I'm keeping cfs2 Pacific/Far East, cos I reckon il-2 is perfect for all other theatres of war.

I reckon this site has seen a download run like never before over the last few days and my mouse is burning from all the clicking!

Finally I'd like to thank all the cfs2 modders out there who have produced these great planes, scenery, ships etc. :guinness:

Welcome!

Welcome aboard Flying Spud!

This is the right place for all CFS 2. It's amazing that a 9 year old sim can be so modern and up to date, but it is. While we may be missing a clickable VC or the auto-gen buildings of the later FS series of sims, we can still pull the trigger and drop a bomb or two when needed. CFS 2 is the perfect mix of a flight sim and a combat sim and as you've noted, can be turned into almost any thing the owner wants. From WW I to Vietnam, CFS 2 does it all pretty well.

Be sure to post a thread if you run into any trouble. The 100 plane limit is the most noted weakness of CFS 2, but there are a few others and we've found solutions to most of them over the years.

Thanks Jag, especially when i counted up my planes and found 98! That's probably enough though - I can always take a couple of marginal ones out if I see something better. I'm matching the aircraft(I fly fighters mostly) to stock and maskriders scenery, so its just US, Jap, Br/Cw and Dutch.

I definately reckon the Pacific/Far East is better represented by this game than any other currently available. PF just doesn't look right somehow - too dull and damage effects on Jap aircraft are all wrong; as if they had self-sealing fuel tanks and armour plating too.

Another thing i like is that we can populate with so many planes, ships etc now, without any noticeable reduction of fps with modern pc's, this game was well ahead of its time alright.

Wow that's amazing - thanks. One thing I do need is some Japanese vehicles, I've got some tnks but so far no airfield vehicles, like refuelling trucks etc.

Anybody seen any?

Yep, lots of 'em in the library here.

Go to the "Add-ons" > "CFS 2 Add-ons" > (scroll to the bottom of the page) "Choose Author's Name" > "Wolfi"

Wolfi has several Allied, Japanese and German vehicle packages.

What a silly thing to say, you'll be flying all over the world before you know it!

Welcome to the Basement spud!

Spud,

Welcome to the basement!

Down here we just do CFS2, on this thread anyway.... That being said, ...... As others have already warned you, before long, like the rest of us, you will have multiple installs of CFS2 for early PTO, Mid PTO, Late PTO, early, mid and late MTO, early, mid and late Western ETO, and Eastern ETO. Then you will advance to Korea and Vietnam.

I have about 80 aircraft, and as many ships, in each of my installs, just to be realistic. Instead of just skinning a plane and changing the aircraft.cfg, I make a whole new plane with the new skin.

Anyway welcome aboard and enjoy the ride!

Oh boy, Spud. You made a new world for me. I bought CFS2 when it first came out in the middle ages. Took one look at it and turned up my nose at the terrible graphics, the awkward looking airplanes and it looked like it's only purpose was to kill one another. Now I locked my machine guns over 62 years ago and have kept away from anything that would cause any creature bodily harm.
But the screenshots show a completely different CFS2 than what came out of my box and I plan to get me some. The planes and scenery look terrific and I have been ignoring them for the past fifty years. Thanks a lot Spud !
I wonder how Windows 7 and DirextX 11 will treat it.

Spud, welcome to the group, it's nice to run into another Nipponophile. Here in the USSA(yes, I spelled that right)we have what we call thrift shops. These are most cases charities who take donations from the public(mostly for tax write offs). I was in one in early Oct. and found CFS2, the disks were perfect but the case had taken a flak hit, I got it for one American ruble. I joined here in late Oct. Like you I was fascinated with the array of sites supporting this game and was disappointed at the sites taken down for one reason or another or folks who just lost interest. The biggest pain in this sim are the "paysites", the sites who either make you wait or limit your downloads unless you pay to join. I guess it's better to have them than not have them, I find them obnoxious due to the blood these people have sweated producing these modifications for free while someone else makes the money.

Yes, that's the problem with us Colonials, we're too opinionated.

The 100 plane limit is bypassed by having big hard drives and multiple installs of the game for different theaters of war. Another helpful hint is you get a plane you like, install a certain panel, another texture, weapons mod, maybe you yourself tweak a .dp file, sound, etc., I have a folder on my removable media called The Hanger I store them in. Obio has combined two He-219s and produced about the best example of that plane for CFS2 in existence. I took the stock Model 52 Zeke, added a Zero trainer texture(orange undersurfaces), a panel I like(a man in Spain made it, I don't recall his name. The shell casings from the 7.7 nose guns eject in Virtual Cockpit mode, unfortunately into the cockpit)a new engine sound, and reading a thread recently learned how to tweak the gun effectiveness up to the 1% standard of accuracy. This is my "personal" Zero for Quick Combat. The former Simtech Do-335 in nightfighter livery a friend on the forum sent me is there too. Another friend provided me with textures for the Middle Eastern wars from post-WW2 to present. The Hanger will be stocked with Israeli, Syrian, and Egyptian craft soon.

My interests are the Finn/Soviet wars, the Nomonhon Incident, Sino Japanese, Spanish Civil War, Mid-East Conflicts. My main interest is German/Japanese nightfighters and to a lesser extent, Allied. I have another sort of grisly interest in kamakazes. Not defending against them, but flying them. I've met a few night fighter enthusaists, I am yet to meet another flightsimmer interested in flying Japanese kamakaze missions. In CFS2, load a Zeke with bombs in a dive bombing Training Mission and try to get through the flak and hit the carrier in a vulnerable spot. It is a challenge. I have a link for the Willow biplane trainer, try it one of those. I also have the Kikka jet.

I stand corrected on the source, I have the Boulton-Paul DEFIANT in nightfighter colors from I believe Padbury Aircraft.

Welcome, and should you be flying tailgun position at night in a Stirling and see an He-219 rising below you, that will probably be me.

Banzai!

Glad I made somebody happy this Christmas! :icon29:

Thanks to everybody in this thread for the advice and help for a cfs2 newbie (well it feels like the game has just been released to me). I'm gonna get those Jap vehicles by Wolfi right away, and the hanger idea sounds brilliant too. Tonybones those kamikaze flights sound fun - I've actually tried that on il-2/PF and yep it's quite a buzz and a LOT harder than it sounds.

Still trawling through those links that miamieagle gave me - some of that stuff I would never have found myself.

Jag; stunning screenies.

egypt thanks for the tips mate.

One more question; I've read that FDG did a good Ki-45 Toryu "Nick", but I'm danged if I can find it anywhere. I believe Netwings used to host it but that site still seemd down. Any ideas?

Spud, I have it, VB's and Akemi's Ki 45 in my library, so I know it is out there. It is not in SOH FDG addons, so let me do some more looking.

If nothing else, we could maybe send it to you in emails in parts.

Spud, I got IL-2 over here in a box I got from Amazon in a 3_pack, then heard there was a 73 meg add-on before it would work right. It's still in the box.

From what I have seen in CFS2 we need to build missions in order to do a lot of the free-style stuff, like kamikaze into ships.

DD I've found another Ki-45 at Hagochu's site, thanks to a link given me earlier in this thread. Here's the link:

http://translate.google.com/transla...rs.jcom.home.ne.jp/hago/index.htm&sl=ja&tl=en

Good range of of other Jap planes too including Ki-43-111, armed Ki-46's , J1N (Irving) and C6N (Myrt).

Spud, the site you cite is Akemi's. He has some very good AC. Some of them do not have panels. His Nick does, and at first I used his Nick panels in his Dinahs(check out the Myrt with the upward firing gun, I've done some damage with that plane). I want to give you a heads up about the Alpaha Dinah at the Outhouse: It is a cool plane with the Home Defense bands painted on it, but does not have a panel. I think it was Jagd who sent me the panel by sending me the whole plane. If you want either the panel or the whole aircraft send me a PM with an email address and I'll pass it on. Both Akemi and AS make very good Dinahs. I use the Alpha panel on Akemi's Ki-46, Devil Dog pointed me towards Morton, who makes first class textures and panels for many planes, skins and panel for the Nick included. Morton is at:

http://cid-7f2604cfe3f60274.skydrive.live.com/home.aspx

I guess I am going to use the panel from an Me-163 for the little Japanese jet fighter as it does not have one, and the panel from the Ki-115 for the Baka. I live within 7 miles of the USAF Museum that has a real Baka(Ohka) on display. As soon as I locate the link I will be posting a source for the Kikka jet fighter made specifically for CFS2 and also two models of the WILLOW trainer, one wheeled and one with floats.

Happy holidays to you my friend and...

Banzai!!!
