Any Kerouac fans here?

Having returned from a RW weekend camping trip over the North Cascades highway to the Winthrop, WA area, I decided to fly it in the sim tonight. Launched out of Concrete Muni heading east. The river, the highway, and the series of lakes and dams is all well-represented in ORBX, and so, reaching Ross Lake, I couldn't resist heading north and climbing to take a turn around Desolation Peak, a place I've always intended to climb but haven't yet.

I was absolutely astonished when, upon buzzing the summit, I discovered that - whether thanks to ORBX or Misty Moorings I do not know - the Desolation Peak fire lookout tower exists in my sim. It's not quite true to life... but it's close (just set atop a gantry, when the real things sits right on the rock), and it's there.

"Hozomeen, Hozomeen, the most mournful mountain I ever seen... and the most beautiful."

"Down on the lake rosy reflections of celestial vapor appeared..."

My mother's copy of "On The Road" is on my bookshelf. Surprisingly, it wasn't even banned in the East, with the antibourgeois message probably outweighing the blatant hedonism.

I also liked the movie. Really well done.

Well played, Carl.

Bjoern, good to hear. I haven't seen the new version of the movie yet; still need to do that. Dharma Bums was always my favorite - hence my fascination with Desolation peak - but On the Road is a classic too.

there is a bgl that you can download from orbx that gps maps all the fire towers in PNW region that orbx have added

"On the Road" marked my adolescent years, even though I never dared or managed to do even one tenth of what was described in the book. I am still a fan of course.

He spent a year at my high school (before my time but some recognizable teachers and coaches appear - covered in The Vanity of Duloz).

Will take Kerouac simming over tube-flying any day...
