Anybody know how to generate fsx thumbnail images in 64-bit Windows?

Anybody know how to generate fsx thumbnail images in 64-bit Windows?

Under my 32-bit Win XP, I used a utility called autothumbnail which worked just fine from within FSX. However, I just converted to a 64-bit version of Win 7 and autothumbnail doesn't work in a 64-bit system. Does anyone know of a good substitute?

There is a compiled 64bit version of Autothumbnail available now.
I had the same problem running Vista until the update came out.
See if I can figure out where I got it... :kilroy:

EDIT: Okay it was posted here last fall.
Just use the new autothumbnail.exe included in the linked file below.
This 64bit version was created by the author of the original one.

That's welcome news, Dain. I really liked the earlier Autothumbnail software and I'm sure this one is just as good.

Ooops, I spoke too soon. Actually, I encountered an error (the program comes sans Help). The message reads:

"Cannot initialize simconnect Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component" If anyone can advise me on this one, I would appreciate it.

Another, easier method: Make a screenshot of the aircraft, convert it from .bmp to .jpg, rename the image to "thumbnail.jpg" and drop it into the aircraft's "texture" folder.

No resizing needed.

I'm guessing here, but you can't use that file all by itself.
You just use the 64bit version in that link to replace the original 32bit version autothumbnail.exe.
Swap it out.
You still need to have all of the other original files installed.
Hope that helps.

EDIT:Here is a link to some other posts concerning this:

You're close - it's a slight bit more complicated than that but the bottom line is you have to get FSX to automatically run autothumbnail on startup. In Win 7 this requires an entry in an xml file called exe.xml in the user\appdata\roaming\Microsoft\FSX folder. The bad news for me is that I still can't get FSX to create thumbnails using this program. I did get it to execute - but nothing came of it. You're supposed to get a new FSX menu choice under "Add-Ons" but it never showed up. However, I was using an Autothumbnail version I downloaded from avsim called authumbnail2.zip but now that I look more closely at it, I'm not sure that executable was ever claimed to run on a 64-bit system. Still looking.....think I'll revert just the autothumbnail.exe part to a version mentioned in the thread suggested by Dain.

Yeaaa, I am a happy camper!! The program version on flightsim.com works so I am good to go. Thanks, Dain for providing the lead.

Yep, I use the aircraft selection screen in FSX so all my thumbnails have the same background. . .get a good 3/4 view position and take the shot. Load it into PSP and crop and save to the file folder as "thumbnail".

Just so everyone knows, there obviously are a number of ways to create thumbnails in fsx. Some are mentioned in the posts above but most require some form of screenshot creation and then the resulting file must be separetly copied into a specific aircraft (texture) folder. This certainly is not hard but with autothumbnail, it gets even easier. You just fly the aircraft for which you want a thumbnail and when you get to a spot view scene you want to turn into a thumbnail, you invoke an fsx menu choice that says something like Get thumbnail, and a second or two later, the job is done. The picture has been created, sized appropriately, and stored in the correct fsx aircraft folder, all without further action from you.

Yep, I used to use it, but found that it was not always 100%. Especially with ported aircraft, it was sometimes hit or miss as to whether or not it would work.

Is the way I described more work, sure, but every image is consistent in background and aircraft position. . . . .to each his own. This happens to be mine.:salute:
