Anyone have the Virtavia F-104 ?

I love F-104s, but I'm not crazy about the Virtavia one. The incuded loadouts are odd, and the flight model is not very good in my opinion.

What I wouldn't give for an updated Cloud9 -104 that is FSX/P3D compatible!

I'd say the SSW F-104s are about the best ones out there today-- although their external models and VCs and texturing aren't up quite up to modern standards IMHO. They are still worth looking at though--- I own the G and S packages, and they seem to have great flight models.

Thanks, how are the graphics for this plane and might it work in P3D? The SSW F-104's look dated and I am not up to real as it gets with this plane anyway. Just want one that is fun and might do some repaints.
 
I started to update the AS/Virtavia F-104 FDE a while back, but the flight model was so buggie I lost interest. Maybe now that's it's a new year and I have many of the F-104 manuals, I'll have another look at it. If I can get it squared away I'll post it here.

I googled the Cloud 9 F-104 for FSX and found this which I post as it has been done with permission from the original authors.

good news for you: There's a bunch of Italian flightsim dev's who got permission and the source files from the Cloud9 F-104 developers to continue on the development of the F-104S (ASA) Italian variant of the Starfighter for FSX!

I have both the Virtavia model and the SSW F-104G. I now use the Virtavia F-104 as my "go to" Starfighter in FSX accel but only after a bit of tweaking. I imported both the SSW's airfile and soundset into the virtavia model and made some changes to the aircraft.cfg to make it fly better.

I am quite happy with the result. I can just fire the airplane up and go fly without all the preparations required for the SSW model. The VC is also closer to what the cockpit looked like in the USAF F-104A (circa 1959).
 
I have to admit to never really liking the AS F-104 and always preferred the Captain Sim one even though it's ported. There are some difficulties with the AS paint kit (I'm only a simple repainter after all) and the nose section never worked for me. I find the SSW exterior models superior and, of course, it's the European version. As far as I know the SSW FDE has been developed in collaboration with Italian F-104 pilots and I can fly it and land it without too much trouble!!

However, I never feel totally comfortable with criticising other people's very considerable efforts and am eternally grateful to AS/Virtavia for doing subjects no-one else has ever shown any interest in. Most notably the Voodoo....! ...Scorpion! ...Lincoln! ...Savage! And others too numerous to mention!!:applause:

Your point is well taken, and my comments re: the AS/Virtavia -104 were not directed at Phil, et. al. Or their products in general. I agree with your observation-- AS and Virtavia were/are willing to do the less covered aircraft-- I'm still tooling around in the FS2004 EB-57!!!

The ex Cloud9-revisited version has been released as a freeware since 2012 (about), by the guys of Sim Skunk Works, with the permission of the former owner of Cloud9.

Sorry to see that, I got a working F-104S for FSX with no problems so far. It is a minefield out there at times.
