AS F8 Crusader panel

I'll DL the 15 to check it out gauge-wise....but it may be too 'glass' for my liking....I prefer steam-powered good-old dials....;)

Edit .....got it....and yes, it 'could' benefit from some more tlc ....though not quite as distorted in widescreen as some. Things like the mirrors are so prominent - and static ....they tend to detract from the overall...even 'faked' moving ones would improve it all...;)

Finding 'really good' photos of cockpits reasonably 'square-on' [or not finding them] is what limits choices of subject matter....
....but I did find this one....so here's 'step one' in a long, slow process - namely twisting it 'square'...;)

If you don't know what it is....think 'black' ....;)

Playing with the Blackbird and I noticed it had a working system for Oxy levels, Tank Pressure, etc so have spent the better part of 3 days getting it to work 'right' on the Crusader. For the life of me I couldn't get the 'low oxy' light to kick in where I wanted it to [or at all] ...at 20%.... but finally managed it...with lateral thinking [not a strong point for me when mucking around in XML].
My Panel had originally 'faked it' by displaying fuel Q levels instead, as a lot of models do. Took a few trips around the planet...time-wise to use up the oxy in trial and error until I got it to do what it's supposed to do....;)

Then....while transitioning from day to night [several times] I had to revise little bits re lighting effects in other gauges....luminous vs bright, etc.
It never ends.....updating more of the Thud likewise and some gauges I'd originally done in 2010 were still being revised 4 years later....;)

F-8 Panel ...

Hello Paul,

I finally (having gotten a widescreen monitor) installed this. Followed the instructions (pretty basic, and well-written) - and now when I select the specific F-8 (I only did one in the .cfg, just to test), FSX hangs. Any other F-8 submodel is fine, when aliased to the ported over panels done by Don et al.

Any ideas?

thanks,

dl

dl....check all the gauges are where they are supposed to be...namely in the panel folder. If it hangs it's likely due to wanting to find something that's not in the correct place. The panels run painlessly in FSX Accel...with no issues [normally]..;)

Hi Paul - and thanks for the reply.

The download only had 1 cab file, and that was already in the panel.F8 folder ... am I missing something?

dl

Thanks - I'm using the correct download.

My comment about the .cab file was that there only was one set of gauges (that cab file), not that that there wasn't anything else but that .cab.

I dropped the included panel.F8 into the aircraft root folder, dropped in the effects, and edited my aircraft.cfg lights section as required ....

dl

Had to refresh my memory re that one....was a while ago...

There's one cab...it must be put in the panel.f8 folder where the panel.cfg file is.

Only thing I can think of is the sonic boom effects in the panel.cfg.... if you don't have them it might cause a hang ...so comment them out and it may help.

Hi Paul,

Tried that too - and I didn't have that gauge installed, so that was a good guess. Still no go. Commented out the fS9gps too, even though I saw it in the root gauges folder.

Here is my panel.cfg file ...

Am at wits end ... and I know it's the panel, since if I alias the plane to Don's panel, then it's fine.

aircraft.cfg ...

Not that it likely has anything to do with it, but here's the one aircraft that I've aliased to this panel ...

description=© ALPHA Simulations 2005\n\nIn 1953 the F8U-1 Crusader won the Navy competition for the new carrier-based day fighter. It flew supersonic on its maiden flight in 1955. A Crusader set a national speed record in 1956 by flying over 1000 mph, for which it won the Thompson Trophy. In 1957 Major John Glenn flew an F8U non-stop from Los Angeles to new York, setting a transcontinental speed record. In 1958 Vought received the first Certificate of merit ever awarded an aircraft manufacturer by the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics for the design, development and production of a US Navy aircraft. In the Vietnam conflict the Crusader had the highest kill ratio over communist jets of any Navy aircraft. The F8U series enjoyed a long service life which was extended in the 1960s by remanufacturing and updating existing aircraft. Crusaders flew in Navy reserve units until 1987, and the French navy flew its Crusaders well into the 1990’s.

If I alias the panel to the panel.XB-43, then it's all good.

ok - partial success.

I reinstalled the panel, and this time, when I load the plane, and thought it looks like FSX is hung, if I wait 1 minute or so, now it loads.

f-8 panel buggered.jpg

that's at 1440 x 900

But the panel / gauge alignment is all buggered. I'm guessing my screen's resolution/proportions are wrong for this panel? Native res is 1440 x 900 .... I tried it on the 1366 x 768 you mentioned - now screen is all fuzzy (not native res) , and there were still misalignments ...

:banghead:

Getting there, then....

My panels tend to get a wee bit complicated [think heavy load/demanding] and are ideally suited to 1680x1050 res.
Thinking back to last year I did wrestle with making them more tolerant of screen proportion changes...not sure if that included this one...but from memory had to do with the sizeable= and/or movable= lines in the cfg.... and that applies to all the windows that say 'size_mm=1680,1050'...as all of those locate various layers as an absolute.

It won't be an issue with choice of paint...as long as the panel is in the correct AS model [obviously]...;)

Any gauges in the default folder won't be an issue ...so stuff like the gps doesn't need commenting out.

Fuzzies come from non-native resolutions in LCD monitors....always use the native...no matter what program you are using [or game].
I have this on my wife's comp...at 1366x768 [a different res and proportion]...I'll give it a check and see how bad it behaves...;)

Another thought....that's the modded VC. Does the 2D look vaguely OK at least?

The VC alterations maybe are affected by the aircraft.cfg 'view' settings [not sure]...
Mine in the aircraft.cfg are...

[Views]
eyepoint=22.489, 0.0, 2.401

which looking at the numbers are most likely original...as when I move one it's never to a third decimal...;)
