At The Movies

Here are two classic WWII airplane flicks that I have recently watched via Netflix...

Air Force (1943)
B-17 "Mary Ann" arrives in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack and continues on to the Philippines. Best up-close look at a D model B-17 you're gonna get in a movie. Some familiar faces from movies of the 1940's and 50's. John Garfield is good as the cynical gunner.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944)
Van Johnson and Spencer Tracy star in this adaptation of Capt. Ted Lawson's book, which BTW is still a good read after 60+ years. Humongous bomb blasts but pretty good special effects for back then.

My dad helped in a small way with the training Gen Doolittle and his crews received before the mission. He got to meet the man. My dad admired him for the rest of his life.

Too bad we don't have many Jimmy Doolittles around anymore. His types are surely needed today,....military and public service wise.
