Our South African Air Force are still using the Dak, called 'TP's' as they are modified with P&W turbo props.
We also, in our SAAF museum at Ysterplaat (FAYP) have the Coelecanth Dak. This flew the newly discovered Coelecanth fossil fish to Cape Town, about 60 years ago. We are slowly restoring this aircraft, but due to finances etc....

I agree, Bill and I have also been saying this for 25 years on Usenet. The newsgroups are terrible. Guys replying with hundreds of lines of text
and adding a "Yes" to the top. That may not sound like much it being text but when you multiply it by thousands of users at any given moment
on Usenet it all adds up.

Guys quote back 6 pictures yet their reply has no need at all for them. It takes maybe 4-5 seconds to drag that mouse cursor down the reply
and delete a large portion.

I for one enjoyed the pictures posted. But as I look for this thread just about every day, I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like a huge "time suck" has happened here with almost a full page of arguments back and forth about pictures and whatnot.

Please respect the fact that this thread is about a new VC for the C-47 by Manfred Jahn and his team and not about pictures or the way people are connected to the internet.

People who can't wait for this (incredible) VC or those who just prefer an old style VC, can of course reinstall the first version of the model, which uses the default DC-3 VC. Definitely not bad and there are several alternative texture sets for this VC.

I can understand the frustration of people who are on dail-up, wifi or just on slow-internet. Therefore I have some advice for them as well. Choose a browser on which you can select whether you want pictures to be loaded automatically or not. And please realise that it impossible to show something without adding pictures.

Our VVC OH panel has switches for nav, beacon and anti-collision lights. In Manfred's original external C-47 model i see only nav lights and landing lights while there are working switches for beacon and strobe lights too in Manfred's original modern Dakota VC.

I wonder, do i have the right/latest external C-47 model ?... The folder name is 'Douglas_C-47_V2' and the MDL file dates 12/3/2013.

Is it correct that the external model does not yet feature an anti-collision light on top of the vertical stab nore a beacon ?....

I checked for you- my folder is named the same and my MDL file is dated 04/17/14 (R1 and R2 from Gman) so it would appear yours is older....

I checked the external model- using the ALASKA AIRLINES livery- there is a RED Anti-Collision light on top of the vertical fin... and nothing below the aircraft.

I don't think there is an anti-collision light. I have a strobe and beacon on the top of the tail. The nav lights include the usual wing-tip lights, and one at the base of the tail. That's all the lights except landing.

The V2 in the SOH library is the last model to my knowledge. The aircraft folder is called "Douglas_C-47_V2" and it contains two model files. The first one is called "C47R_1.mdl" and is dated 02/11/2013 1:49 PM, and the second one is called "C47R_1.mdl"and is dated 03/11/2013 11:10 AM. Among other differences, one has an orange flash light on the tail and the other one doesn't.

I did a quick scan of the thread about the V2 version of the C-47, but I couldn't find any updated or announcement of updates from the model files.

I'm a bit puzzled by the fact you have a different date for the model file. But perhaps Amsterdam and Noordwijk aren't in the same time-zone.....

EDIT: Found it there is an update posted for DX10 users in post 280 from the thread. These files are indeed both dated 03/12/2013

Actually, I have two folders in my Douglas_C-47_V2 folder call "model...". There are "model.C47_1" and a "model.C47_2" folders. In the former there is a C47R_1.mdl file dated 4/17/2014 and a model.cfg dated 7/5/2013. In the latter there is a C47R_2.mdl file dated 4/17/2014 again, and a model.cfg file dated 10/8/2013.

4/17/2014 appears to be the date I installed the DX10 tweaks mentioned in the post above, or perhaps a newer version of the same.

Yes, Huub, sofar i have been using the 'C-47_1' external model. It appears that the 'C-47_2' model does feature a physical anti-collision light on top of the vert.stab of which the actual light needs to be un-commented in the aircraft.cfg. so that's Ok now. Thanks for the links !

Because Hansi uses click sounds for the switches in the BT-67 and C-47 models i use them too for the VVC ( Hansi would've no doubt done the same if he would've still been aboard.. ) Code for the strobe light switch ( which i intend to use for the anti-collision light) seems to be missing though. No problem we'll sort that out later. I might have to add beacon lights to the external model anyway.

AFAIK, if there is a rotating light atop the vert.stab. it is ususally called anti-collision light.( please correct me if i'm wrong ?..) Beacons are usually referred to rotating or flashing lights on top and/or bottom of the fuselage.

Can you confirm that the strobe light switch in your modern C-47 VC does not trigger any sort of light on the external model ? ( that's the case in the modern VC i have here... )

You can do a bit of fancy stuff with the code for the lights. Remember the bit of code I posted a few pages back regarding visibility controlled by "title=" line entry?
This could be used to control the visibility of the entire light switch. A "VINTAGE" entry would produce no beacon light switch and no strobe light switch for an even ye-old-time-ier experience.

(When did planes get beacon and strobes anyway? The former in the 50s, the latter in the 60s?)

Red, rotating beacon use started in the early 1950's, flashing navigation lights were often used as anti-collision lights at night, then strobes came into being in the late 60's.
