actually, i copied that avatar from another forum. (guitars canada.com)
a guy there had it and i liked it. of course i can't use it there, because he's using it.
right now, being totally poor and without a job i am playing a squier affinity strat through a fender frontman reverb amp (10w i think?)
the rig's only redeeming features are the bridge pick up on the strat isn't a single coil, but a twin single wired in series so it has power like a humbucker but isn't as muddy. the amp i had modded by a friend. it's got better pots and a slightly more powerful driven chanell. combined, they are almost tolerable to play against the crappy speakers conected to this computer.
i like to play along to mp3s of stuff i like. mostly 80's stuff like priest, nugent, scorpions, etc. i also have an ibanez 5 string bass that i play through a panasonic karoke machine that must be 20 yrs old
when i am back to my trade (soon) i plan to aquire a les paul or an explorer and a better amp.

I have a Squier, cheezy. It's a heavily modded SE Affinity Strat. Some of my guitar pals (I've come to the conclusion that guitar heads are a sub-species of Nerd) don't believe you're "serious" unless you've spent 1500 USD on an electric guitar, but I am not one of these. I have three Strats: a partscaster that I built myself, a Carvin Bolt, and the Squier. Guess which one I play the most. I should say that the only original components left on it are the body and neck, but that's the point. IMO, Squiers were made to be hot-rodded.
I'm going to have to check out that site you mentioned. I contribute semi-regularly at Strat-Talk (www.strat-talk.com) which I do recommend. They have a board there just for getting the best out of a Squier. I suggest you have a look. It's hard to find grown-up guitar forums. There are a lot of people on the net who'll launch a really vitriolic personal attack (from behind a web alias) just because you don't have the same record collection as they do, or play the same guitar, with the same pickups, through the same amp, which I find both infantile and unacceptable.
One more thing: I got th deluxe version of Hero from my library sale for 2 USD. If I remember correctly, you don't think much of Zhang Ziyi. What do you think of Maggie Cheung?

you're totally right about the gear snobs. there are people like that. i see it on other forums about other subjects. it's a disease, i think
i will definitely check out the forum. the link i posted isn't like that. most guys are pretty cool, even if they are liberals in canada
check out a couple of guys i met on there. one is http://www.dolphinstreet.com/ a cool player who does interesting lessons for beginner intermediate players.
the other is tonedr. he does lessons and demos. he's a very clean player and a really cool guy
maggie cheung is hot, but like many chinese, she has no love for japan.
she's not shy about telling it to anyone.
that said, she does make "the heroic trio" a fun movie, soley for her costume.
she's a pretty good dramatic actress too.(see her in "the soong sisters")
michelle yeoh is the only one for me, although jeeja yanin really impressed me in "chocolate"
of course the masters of the genre have a special place in my heart too, like angela mao and chang pei-pei, meiko kaji.
hey, did you know cha-cha is a martial arts film maniac too? she has a much better library than me. one of these days i'm gonna get a 55 gallon drum of popcorn, and a rootbeer, and go knock on her door till she lets me watch all the movies she has that i don't.

Thank you for the links. I have nothing against Canada; I live right across the bridge in Niagara Falls, NY, and have been there many times. When I was a boy we used to go to the CNE every year. I especially love Toronto, although I haven't been there for a while now. Also, I refuse to judge people against a liberal vs. conservative baseline, so you're covered. I think it's done my country a lot of harm, and it's not even descriptive. I'd better stop there before the thread gets locked.
I did know about Cha-cha's library. I'm not as deep into MA films as you or her, but I do appreciate good fight choreography. Did you know that our own Ickie was quite the guitarist?

he's got some pretty cool music for free download. i have some mp3's on my drive i listen to every now and again. if only we could get him to play something hard and heavy

I have thoughts on this, cheezyflier. I think a certain number of people explore the internet and are both angered and bewildered at the discovery that the world is full of people who don't agree with them. I'm sure the anonymity of the web identity also has a good deal to do with it. This is just my own little opinion, and not God on the Throne. Just me, and I assure you, I do know the difference. I mean, how many statements do you see every day online that the poster would probably never dare to say to someone's face?
I've heard about the animosity some Chinese have for the Japanese, but have never witnessed it personally. One of my favorite teachers was from China. Her family had been Nationalists, and got chased out when the Communists came to power. We often had Japanese exchange students in our classes, but if she had any beef with that, she never showed it.
Anyway, here's my Super Squier. It was originally black, but I stripped it to the wood and repainted it in white laquer as an experiment. I also did some James Bond stuff with the wiring...

this is what i play these days
i got the strat just like you see it from craig's list by trading an old worn out ovation that i got from a pawn shop in the states about 5 or 6 years ago.
the strat's ok for what it is. i'm more of a epiphone/gibson guy, really. to me the knobs on a fender are in the wrong place (i removed the volume knob) and the neck is a little skinny for my taste. still, i can't complain. it plays nice for the price, and i sure am glad to be rid of that ovation. i'm really surprised that the nut and bridge work so well. the guitar holds tune better than it has any right to.
the bass actually belongs to a friend of my step daughter. it's been here so long i wonder if he even remembers he owns it. far as i know i'm the only one who plays it.

We have casino gambling in the Falls now; since then they've sold those Affinity Strats for buttons in the Buy and Sell shop. I've seen row upon row of them. The SE is a bit different. It has a full sized Strat body, but made of agathis instead of alder, and the headstock is the smaller 50s/early 60s type.
Now that I think of it, I've seen MIM Strats on sale used for 99 USD and a Jackson like Stevie Vai played in Crossroads. "The gambling bug'll get you if you don't watch out!!!"
I played an Epiphone for years, and I'd still like to have a Firebird. If I had money, I'd have a climate controlled room full of guitars like Nigel Tuffnal (Spelling?). I gravitate to strat styles because I like feel of the contoured body, and because I'm a hobbit (5'6" or 5'7" depending on my hair) the lighter weight is a bit easier on me, but I have no raging antipathy toward other guitars. That just never made any sense to me.

NOTE: I forgot to mention, that Jackson was only 75 USD in the Buy and Sell shop. Like a lot of Strat guys, though, I don't like the Floyd Rose tailpiece...
