Auburn Wins Iron Bowl

I missed the end of that game to attend a HS Regional Championship game. Sad I missed the end, but glad I went to the playoff game too. Our Gretna Hawks took the Buckingham Knights 42-41 in OT, whew. Gretna had a three score lead at the half and everyone thought it would be a walk. Things don't happen like that in football. Buckingham came out the second half ready to play football and they did just that. They contained Gretna's Nick Miller, all-state in every category and overcame a 35-15 deficit to knot the game at 35 all in regulation play. Buckingham scored first in OT, but missed the PAT to go up 41-35. Gretna had a 4th and season to go when Nick Miller carried it in to tie it at 41 and Gretna's kicker, a freshman (9th grader), kicked the PAT to win for the Hawks 42-41. I am excited. Gretna gets a home field next Saturday at 2:00 in the state semi-final, with the winner going on to the Championship game in Salem the following Saturday. HS football doesn't come any better. Even though it was a high scoring game, every hit that was made was heard, it was a brutal game. Two of Buckingham's players were taken off in rescue vehicles, one I am sure with a bad concussion he sustained after a blow to the back of his head, when he made a try to swat a ball down and fell over on his head. He was unconscious for a few minutes and things looked scary. He stood up on his own, which was a sigh of relief, but they drove him to Lynchburg to the hospital for MRI's. Another Knight player had to go out for a possible leg injury.
