Aussie Translation Needed...

Hey All,

So I been listening to a fair bit of Aussie Country lately and quite like it but the language... dogger boots? utes? here is an example from some site (I don't recall which)...

Who better to hoon the properly batsheet (you know the real spelling) Australian Holden HSV Ute than The Stig?

hoon? properly batsheet? Ute?

I think a Ute is an old american el camino or ranchero?

Wombat you out there?

-Ed-

Ute is Oz slang for a 'utility' vehicle. Think sporty looking pick-up, not necessarily an El Camino or Ranchero but along those lines.

Hoon - to engage in irresponsible anti social behaviour - when regarding vehicles...speeding, burnouts, drifting, etc
Properly batsheet....bat****? - aggresively mad and irresponsible, .....
Ute - Originally a Utility vehicle - a light wellside pickup based on a saloon car - like a Camino or Ranchero only using local vehicles, Holdens and Ford Falcons. Used to be trade vehicles, but now the Aussie 2 are more like status vehicles - Particularly the Holden Maloo Ute.

Actually,
Quite a few American cars are based on Holden - the defunct "new" Pontiac GTO comes to mind first.
Some here in the USA are screaming for GM to use the Holden UTE as a "new" El Camino.....

Hey All,

Thank you for the replies.

I'll have to continue to expand my vocabulary! I have to admit though I'll probably never get used to the idea of calling another guy my mate - sorry! :icon_lol:

As for the ute...

If these things have any real performance and are either front wheel or better yet all wheel drive based - I'd love to have one! If it's rear wheel drive - in the snow - forget it.

Hi Ed. Can't add anything to the above explanations...they pretty well cover it. The UTE above is a Holden sports job. Things like that usually come with a 5 litre or larger V8 engine, always rear wheel drive. The more workman type versions are usually a 3.8 litre V6 and the suspension not quite so low. There is a popular circuit racing class for these vehicles in these parts, entertaining to watch, the combination of high power and a light back end.

Hey All,

Bogan? They wear dogger boots?

Anyway that Ute with a GTR twin turbo 500+hp V6 and all wheel drive... Well I'd love driving that irrespective of how practical it probably isn't - but then I liked both the Ranchero and El Caminos - as well as the Subaru Brat. Seems there was a Dodge as well. I just like the style - good lookin vehicles.

Hey Ed.
A 'Bogan' is a type of 'Urban Redneck' for want of a better description.
The male of the species tends to wear black 'stovepipe' jeans, black 'Moccasins' with over size 'fur' trim, a black T-shirt under an un-buttoned over size (usually red) tartan pattern shirt, worn hanging loose.
Variations on the theme are limited to white T-shirts, dark grey trackie daks in place of jeans, inevitably worn hanging low enough to expose the top inch or so of the division between the buttocks, the rare two tone moccies (only worn by the affluent Bogan) and the more commonly seen green tartan shirt.
At the top of the affluent Bogan wardrobe sits the multi coloured Track Suit, usually in the style of a parachute 'Jump Suit' and favoured by the drivers of the newer model Utes.
Bogans always smoke cigarettes, drink the 'Beer of their Home State, and subsist on Maccas or KFC.
The female Bogan can be identified by her extremely bleached and overdone hair, several layers of make-up, clad in brightly coloured tight fitting Lycra pants, 'Hoodie tops' and impractical and inappropriate 'Junk Jewellery' accessories.
Not ALL Bogans rely on the 'Rock 'n Roll' to finance their existence, a minority do work a real full time job, the latter being the elite drivers of Utes.

LOL..sounds like the Oz equivalent of the UK's 'Chavs'!

Hey All,

OK so that is what a bogan is... The only thing I can relate to about being a bogan is "drinking beer of their home state" - nothing wrong with that - if the beer is good. I've no idea what a macca is but even I rarely do KFC (Colonel Sanders).

These two sisters - The Sunny Cowgirls, Sophie and Celeste Clabburn who grew up mostly on a WA farm are my current favorites to listen to. The songs and their harmonies are simply awesome.

This song contains a reference that piqued my curiosity...

1:28 to 1:44
"she wore heels and I wore dogger boots
her scenery is on the wall on canvas
mine is through the windscreen of my ute"

Now I know a windscreen is really a windshield but dogger boots threw me for awhile and then I realized they were talking about ropers - basically low heeled cowboy boots common worn by (bull)doggers and (calf)ropers! A ute referenced in the way the song refers to it can't be a bad thing - can it?

Obviously Australia is a cheap place to live since ten bucks in the glovebox does me fine... :mixedsmi:

Anyway I really like their music and would love to have and drive a high performance "Ute".
