November 26-27,1943.
This was the first organized night interception of Japanese bombers.
An Avenger with radar and 2 Hellcats took off from Enterprise's deck to intercept aircraft spotted on Enterprise's radar. Her radar was to vector the Avenger close enough for it's radar to pick them up.The Avenger finally got close enough to pickup the enemy planes thanks to the ships directions. The Hellcats got separated during the flight seeing exhaust from the enemy planes but couldn't catch them. The Avenger was alone and his radar operator guided him in.At 1200 ft the first Betty was sighted and the pilot went to shoot it down, the 2 wing guns hit the Japanese plane and as he went under it the gunner in the ball turret opened fire,Scratch 1.At 500 ft another was spotted and he attacked again with his wing guns,Scratch 2.After seeing the planes the 2 Hellcats headed for them and rejoined. So the first kills at night were actually by an Avenger.
These 3 pilots had practiced these tactics for awhile and said they were ready. One of the Hellcat pilots was, MOH winner,Butch O'Hare.
Hope you enjoyed a little history.
This mission is working on and several other night missions will be done.
