AVH B-17G Problem... HELP!!

Members +
Hey everyone,

This is my first post on SOH, so I apologize if I am posting in the wrong area. I'm new to the website, but not to flight sim's. Especially the CFS series. I'm pretty familiar with how to download add on aircraft and what not, but this one has me stumped! I'll get right to the point.

Since last night, I have been trying to get the AVH B-17G (multiple different variations) to work with CFS3. The game itself runs perfectly fine with the stock aircraft until I go to select one of the B-17's, and then the entire game crashes and sends me right back to the desktop. To the best of my knowledge I have installed everything correctly, and placed the entire folder into Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/Combat Flight Simulator 3/aircraft. I'm running Windows 7. I don't know if that has some sort of affect on the add-on, but I would think if it was going to be an issue it would have affected the game initially when I went to play it, which from what I have seen hasn't, until I go to select the B-17.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love flying the large bombers, and to be quite honest would trade every plane in the game if I could fly this beautiful aircraft. Please HELP!

Welcome to the outhouse! You're in the right spot for all things CFS3, and you'll find the majority of the CFS3 community on this forum.

As for your question, you probably need to install the AvHistory weapons pack (available in the downloads section) and or have engine sounds that the B-17's sound.cfg is aliased to. If you still have trouble, you could check the knowledge base sticky. There is a post in there about troubleshooting crashes, along with a lot of other useful information to help you get started with CFS3. An important thing to remember is that CFS3 is set up quite differently from the other MS flight sims. So a lot of the modding is done a little differently, but if you've played around with the other sims a bit, you shouldn't have too much trouble adapting to CFS3.

Enjoy!

Hi Lancer942,
The commonest cause of crashing when you select the aircraft in QC mode is a fault with the loadout.

In the b17's xdp file, there are various things called, firstly guns in the gunstations section of the xdp need to be installed in the guns folder of CFS3.
In the <loadouts> section of the xdp, there are pylons called for, which are installed into the Pylons folder, and bombs which are installed into the Weapons folder. Once everything you need for the xdp is installed, you need to have the sound.cfg file pointing to a valid source within your CFS3 install.

Don't forget to delete the .bdp file in your aircraft's folder after making any changes otherwise you may still get crashing even though you've fixed it.

It sounds as though the aircraft is showing up on the QC screen, where you select it before it crashes, so we can assume you have most of the textures (.dds files) in the right places.

The b-17 has, as well as the files for the external skin, quite a few texture files for interior gunstations, etc. These are usually located in the cfs3/aircraft/shared folder path of the main install. It is easy to get duplicate shared textures floating around in sub-folders of the Shared folder; try to keep only one set of .dds textures.

Don't worry, it becomes second nature after a while!

You guys forgot about the shared folder in the the AVH MISC section

things needed

Herbies B-17 shared folder(AvH_HG_Shared_Files), sounds(2 downloads), avhistory wep pack, the plane of course, and you to fly it!

No kidding? All that, huh? I guess this really is a different ball game in the way of add-ons. Completely different than what I can remember from CFS 1 any way, and that was light years ago haha. I've had CFS3 for years, but never had a system (as sad as this is) that would support the graphic requirements until now. Thank you guys so much. I'm going to go try all of this now and I'll report back on the results!

Well, my first hold up. Engine sounds imported into the B-17 sound file correctly. I downloaded the WEP pack, and for some reason I go to extract the pylons into the pylon folder, and I get a message saying there were 217 errors. I must be doing something incorrectly. Any ideas?

Wait, after adding the pylons or when you start the game.........and 217 errors dang

Oh and because I havent downloaded the avh wep packs i forgot that you have to download these files......

AvH_WepPak_041708

AvH_Effects_XML_042008(overwrite your stock effects xml, BUT MAKE A BACKUP on your desktop of your stock, just incase)

AvH_FxTextures_042008(go to your effects folder and find FXtextures and drop and overwrite the others, or you can back them up too!)

AvH_Full_Preload_041708(back your stock also!)

and there you go

PM me if you still got problems or keep posting here dude!
:salute: gud luck

Voila! Thanks Jose! That did it! I just extracted them into another folder that I made, and then clicked and dragged like you showed. I'm flying the plane, and everything is good. Next problem. I have guns sounds, but no engine sounds. I have imported Engine pack 1 and 2 into the sounds folder for the B17. Any ideas?

Thanks for everything! you guys are life savers! Everything is up and running now. Jose thank you for all the extra help, and being tolerant of my apparently slow, non-functioning brain (heheh), and grizzly, thank you for letting me know about the updates. What a beautiful aircraft, and the sounds are unbelievable. I finally get everything up and running only to discover that My joystick is in pieces on the floor this morning! Apparently my girlfriends dog decided it would be a good midnight snack. :banghead:

Anywho, the planes and all their skin variations are working. Than you guys so much for your help again. One last thing. I'm getting the same plane showing up multiple times, in game, in the aircraft selection. Any idea what would cause this? Multiple .air or .bdp files?

THE JOY OF CFS3

If you have a wired Xbox360 controller, that can work as a joystick just put the settings to your specifications(that's what i use)........................and the same planes showing up the same in the game how???

Like Quick Combat or when you pick the other B-17s?????

Note the B-17 you pick doesn't change skins or colors like the stock cfs3 planes do.................So you'll have the same skin on your formation of B-17s

P.s I remember hearing that someone was working on a way to get multiple skins working for one plane.......so that may help in the future for all of us!!!
