AVHistory Fw190D-9 Question

Autothrottle

Charter Member
Anybody knows how to fly this bird in a dogfight? It has such a nasty stall characteristic in a tight turn with a P-47D. Any info or other answers on this bird will be greatly appreciated!

Your absolutley right Autothrottle, the 190 does not do well in a turn-fight with a plane like the '47'.
Had to learn that lesson over and over when I was with the AHII bunch. What I try to employ is a
break-away. When I engage an aircraft that starts to lose me in a tight turn, before I lose too much
speed,(which is the 190's better advantage,) I break away into a moderate decline, gain my desired
speed back then loop up,(keep the altitude advantage) then back and set up on my target.

Never try to stay in the turn. Many a Jug has scored a victory with a "steady & tight" over a speedy aircraft that way. Give you a good sample of how a turn-fight can go.(And why at times
I like the 109 over the 190.)

Yes defintely energy fight with the Dora. Also, you can split-s and cuban-8 to try and get the Jug to overspeed in a dive. Really the Dora should be on par with the last generation fighters. make sure you are fighting against an AvH Jug. And turn with your prop torque NOT the enemies.

Thanks for the information guys. Squiffy BTW Please enlighten me on the Cuban 8. Its not in my field manual...:mixedsmi:

It's a pair of diving loops back to back with a half aileron roll in the middle to stay upright. basically rolling out from inverted after the first 3/4 loop. It will look like a figure 8 on it's side. Like this: OO but joined in the middle. This allows you to take the fight into the vertical without covering a lot of ground. You can throw a clover leaf in there too to diverge in the horizontal. At the top of one of the loops. Better yet, even at the bottom when the Jug is smoking hot. Not sure the Jug was the best climber in the world so you can take your chances in the Dora. She should be lighter but plenty powerful with the Jumo. If you get slow, stretch it out with longer head on passes and keep your speed up.
