Avro Shackleton Sounds

Gary,

do I want these? not 'arf. Remember seeing these at airshows as a youngster, climbing under one into the cavernous bomb-bay (taildragger Mk.II AEW). It's hard to remember exactly how they sounded way back then, as a child, it was just VERY VERY loud and vibrated right through your entire body as they taxied by. From what I remember, these sound spot-on. Shame I can't blast these out for that rumble effect at the moment as the wee bairns are in bed.

While we are all on the topic of Shackeltons, I have always wondered about that "giant sparkplug" amidship (top). Will someone explain it to this ignorant Yank? :icon_lol:

"giant sparkplug"

actually, it's a hole in the roof of the fuselage where they put the curling tongs out to cool down, you know, after a good pyjama party, the Shack crews were famous for them. Nothing like settling down on a long flight with your jammies on, a good scary film, popcorn and your 'gal-pals' for company.

It would be as well being a Flux capacitor, the length of time they served waiting for the Nimrod's to take over, time-travel was maybe the real reason they managed to soldier on so long. I for one was glad, I got to see them in the flesh, flying operationally and at shows.

all hail the flux-capacitor (with it's secondary hair styling ability)

...I clearly remember the contra-props giving out a distinct pitch ...
There was quite a shrill harmonic from those props, and quite loud and unpleasant from within.
Crews had permanent high-frequency hearing loss after hours on patrol.

The giant sparkplug is the visible indication of the "Orange Harvest" passive ECM set. Used to detect enemy radar signals being aimed at the aircraft.

Rgr that. From what I have read, the Mk.1's had no soundproofing and the interiors were painted matt black which made those 12 hr patrols depressing and very draining. Not until the Mk.3's did they improve the noise levels inside.

Gary, that sounds like an impressive soundset you have on the brew there!

Let's hear those Griffons GROWL!!!

:salute: Good work mate!

Just having looked at your new website, I'm more than impressed!
The Shackleton sound is coming along nicely, with those distinctive features of contra-rotating props & gurgling Griffons.
The only thing missing on the website are the download links, I love that RR Dart sound on the Herald! It's so painfull at idle - I never knew I could enjoy such a penetrating noise so much!
I always was a Lancaster fan, but with this new soundset I could easily be persuaded to swap with the Shackleton! Great work, I can't wait for the final release...

Regards, Stuart

You might have seen this one, but the 1984 Strathallan show flyby is full of noise.

.

Orange Harvest is an ESM (Electronic Support Measures for detection and classification), not ECM. It worked in the centrimetric range for detecting and classifying enemy X-Band (7.0 to 11.2 GHz) and S-Band (2.0 to 4.0 GHz.) radar.

:)

Gee Guys, you caught me by surprise, i wasn't expecting this much feedback.....Thankyou very much:salute:

Decent samples are almost bled dry on this one. Thanks for the vid links.

Almost ready for release, but the file size is huge at present. I'm trying my best to shrink it without ruining quality.

Probably too late now then but I forgot the start up and running of 3 engines on WR963 a couple of months ago and showing it's new grey over white Coastal Command repaint. :)

Hi,I'm new here, so bear with me please! My name is Rich Woods, I'm part of the Shackleton Preservation Trust maintaining WR963 at Coventry in running condition. Our next engine run is on the 9 July, so if you want a decent recording of a Shackleton's characteristic 'growl', then please come along. If you see me before the run I can arrange to have any recording kit either on board, or in a place that would help you - as you're proably aware the sound is very different between in front of the aircraft, behind the aircraft, and inside. On another Shackleton related note - can anyone point me the way of a Shackleton MR2/AEW2 in simulator form? It seems that for the moment it's going to be the only way to get one in the air.Kind regards,Rich Woods

Rich,

Welcome to the forum.

Can you please drop me a PM with your email address? There was a Shackleton released a few years back which, along with a variety of updates, can be found at Britsim.com (and it's probably worth you having a chat to them there as well - sure they would be glad to speak to you); the updates do involve a fair bit of work, getting other files etc - however, I have done all the hard work and coincidentally sent these files to somebody else yesterday, so I'm quite happy to do the same for you.

Andy

This is the Shackleton i use, probably the same as the one at Britsim, no vc but a fine model.
