If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

.........sad day, AVSIM has been catastrophically attacked by a cracker
.............(SEEMS NOW COULDVE BEEN AN INSIDE JOB and the perpetrator had a set of keys)
.........seems to be a very pointles and damaging criminal action
.they like us will probably need $ for upgrading hardware and so now are asking for donations for the huge job ahead.
.(ive donated and i definitely dont want to see AVSIM go down)

here for TOMS explanation

What is it with these cretins, that they have to attack sites that are open. with stuff freely available to the populace........is it destruction just for the sake of destruction?
Lets hope they can get back on line, like SOH, it would be a disaster if they werefinished.

Those who create are admired by those who are unable and respected by others with same.

Those who destroy for fun are HATED by ALL

.........unfortunately BRETT these unhappy individuals do this sort of stuff to try to think they are superior to others.

......they are like mini-hitlers
remember they didnt allow hitler to be a painter, refused him admission to art school said his paintings were shallow and badly executed and look what that mofo did!!!.
...these people have to be stopped early like hitler shouldve).
there is a push to get the FBI and EURO COPS involved as the perps are rumoured to live UK

Vengeance.

If these jerks do turn out to live in the UK, I'll happily employ my local branch of "Large Men With Pickaxe Handles Ltd" to pay them a courtesy call. What sad lives these muppets must lead?

Yours Bloodthirstly,

what a b unch of twats.have these fools nothing better to do with their time?

Sorry for avsim.

If they had good backups, they could have very easy reconstructed the site with very little effort.

When webmaster gets complacent and relies on security to protect site it is going to happen.

There is NO WAY possible to protect sites from hackers or crackers.

Human beings are EXTREMELY resourceful.

You might be able to provide enough security to keep some talented kid out, but if a serious IT GURU wants to harm your site it can be done.

Until we get some kind of law enforcement nothing is going to change and the hackers will just get more proficent and pervasive.

Sad part about enforcement is... many other things will be affected as well and we will be forced to other restrictions of the web.

The stupid hackers will eventually be dealt with and everyone's, including hackers, liberality and freedom of web use will be affected.

Kinda like kicking a thorn bush

:173go1:

The best solution is backup, backup and backup.

Maintain all updates, especially those dealing with security, as fast as they are released for your web software.

Restrict mime types for acceptance by website that can conceal corrupting code.

It just does not make any sense. I just hope they backed up all their files. Its a shame that some people would do this to a Harmless Websites like Avsim.:isadizzy:

Guys,

Please watch the tone of this thread, or I will be forced to close it. :wiggle:

.........hey RAMI.
...you got the "talk softly and carry a big stick" position eh

........havent been around a lot,
....... our new sargeant at arms, congrats:ernae:
.......thanks, i know your decisions will be fair.:engel016:

They didn't have good backups or they wouldn't be whining.

Erm.... nearmiss, not to put to fine a point on it but from what I understand they were attacked in much the same way as SOH was recently. And despite our backups we're not in tip-top shape yet.

Backups or not, as a community I think a little 'whining' is acceptable under the circumstances.

I'm going to shut up now, Rami's trying to sneak up on me with his stick!:running::kilroy:

Oh come on Rami. People are a little p#$@ed about the whole thing. They need to let off a little steam. This is a big hit to our community and I think we all feel a sense of loss. It makes you want to lash out in some way. Let them get it out of their systems.

When it comes to hackers, the "public whine" is the only real means that they have of measuring their successes. After the attack is done, its the "whinometer" that they watch with their evil grins and puffed chests. How much more do we want to give them?....they get the victory over our site and our emotions too. :kilroy:

It's just another way of venting for some people I suppose, that's why I can accept some. Others grumble and gnash their teeth a bit, and then you have those that want to find the :censored: and exact punishment in cruel and unusual ways!

I wasn't ragging on anyone. I've made the same mistakes on sites where I was admin.

It is a pain in the old wazoo making all the security updates. Some website applications take a lot of time to update.

Backing up huge sites to an offline server takes hours, and that's the best course of action.

Still, you gotta bite the bullet and make backups, if you want to protect your content.

Recently, I lost 4 sites completely when I moved to another webhosting.
The webmaster of the host had pulled a fast one. He used a bootleg copy of the CPANEL,and it was hacked. He lost all the php sites on server I was on. I hope he lost his butt as well, but there was nothing I could do about it.

I cancelled my account and asked for a refund of hosting fees paid.

I was really sweating it, because I'd paid a year in advance for hosting. Flaky as that dude was he refunded all my money for the hosting by Paypal. Later I found the guy was in Mumbai, India. I sure messed up on that one.

Now I check out a hosting to see if they are in the U.S. (phone number I can call with US area code).

I couldn't prove it, but I've had my sites exposed by hosting webmasters. It doesn't make sense, but IMO it was disgruntled employees causing problems for their employer. Maybe they were on the way out, etc.

So, again if I had not had good backups I'd have been up the creek without a paddle. The sites weren't hacked from outside. "The enemy was within".

I've had hosting webmasters change passwords on MySql databases, thinking they were causing problems I guess. If you ever try to recover a password in MySql get ready for a nightmare. I found a workaround to it.
