AvSim news release posted

......... As srgalahad said, many modelers and painters uploaded only to AvSim, many modelers stated that repaints could only be uploaded to AvSim. With those files being no where else (except maybe on Simnetwork since that site is always uploading files to their site without permission), many many files may never be seen again.

FSDome is another that does the same, its a shame yes, but if you google long and hard enough, most MSFS/CFS files will pitch up on another server somewhere, those who will be hardest hit are the small developers and supporters of 'historic' programs such as Flight Unlimited II/III, Fly!,Pro-Pilot and maybe Flightgear and Orbiter, for whom Avsim was a major,if not the only, repository for user tweeks and program upgrades.

This is certainly nothing I thought would happen.

Sure I will miss the downloads, but even more all the info in the Forums, from Hardware to Scenery design to Traffic Tools, years of information gone.

This is a real shame like Burning of the Books in past human history.

This is a crying shame, I really feel it is time for all to assist Avsim in a "rebuild" of all that was lost. Just like Fleur I to have CDed downloads since my CFS2 days. How can the fellowship of SOH help ? I am willing. When will Avsim be ready to recieve any download files ?

I remembered Alphasim had most of their recient freeware downloads linked through Avsim. I have Alphasim freeware from way back. Someone let me know when will Avsim be ready.

"...this sort of thing is done for pure enjoyment..... Very sad."

Mankind is basically good with a few exceptions. It is those exceptions that will continue to give the rest of us grief in ALL aspects of our lives. That is why I believe in capital punishment.

Things have tightened up for me recently. I haven't had much time for anything related to flight-sim. I've tried to get here when ever I could. A little reading, a download or two, then off I went. Trying my best to keep up. Recently impossible.

I feel as if a door just hit me in the face. A road that I liked to travel just washed out with no other means but a very long walk to get to my destination. The only choice I've got. For the life of me I can't even fathom the questionable "why". There's no point in it all. Hackers to me are like slugs in my garden. Only there to feast on something. The word security comes to mind. It's just a shame. I can't even guess how many hard drives and CD/DVDs it would have taken to store the files that were stored in that vast library. I'm beginning to hear a faint echo.

Since I've got interested in the sim, I've downloaded so much GA, low & slow, and WWI eras, that it makes me dizzy. When I started in this hobby and realized the amount of fun that could be had, the ground hog got nervous. He wasn't going to see his shadow for quite some time.

As other have stated. Everyone has their likes. Different planes for different pilots. I'm sure they've all rat-holed a substantial collection away that can benefit the resurrection. Heck, I'll copy all what I have to a hard drive and just mail it to them if that's what's needed.

I just hope everything works out in a positive nature.

Well said. Like yourself, I haven't been able to devote much time to FS lately. I've also suffered through two system reinstalls this past year (due to hardware failures). There were countless files that I've downloaded & enjoyed from Avsim...yet most I never bothered to backup. I just always figured that sites like Avsim would always be there. Unfortuntately, it appears that lower sub-human elements of our society have decided to needlessly attack something that brings so much joy to others. Not to mention the generosity of the Avsim team (and this site, as well!) who provide their services free of charge! It boggles the mind and infuriates all at the same time.

I'm just wondering if many of those who would only upload their files to Avsim might realise now that they could have uploaded to another alternative site like Flightsim.com for example(a good respected site), just in case one site goes down. Just think of all the files that have gone now forever (hopefully they could be recovered) where the authors have stated in their readmes that only avsim and no other sites should host their files. Perhaps in future, from now on, there will be a bit more thought by authors to upload to an alternative site as well as their preferred site.

Well, happily flightsim.com became a little pro-active in recent times - I see a number of my uploads there, that were made only to AVSIM. Casting the net further I see them in all sorts of places that I normally do not frequent.

Are we about to start thanking the pirates???

There are exactly two files that I uploaded to AVSIM a couple of years back that Flightsim added to their collection. I don't think of it as piracy though. It was the Flightsim staff that obtained them from AVSIM as far as I can tell.

Some days after release of my first published repaint of the SF8 Sabre (Luftwaffe JA-111) at AVSIM back in last year's November, it was up at flightsim too. I didn't declare an "exclusively AVSIM" upload permission, so I was quite surprised but not annoyed to find it there.

As long as no money is taken for my works, I'll agree to it.
In my eyes, it's not "piracy", and as we know now, it wasn't too bad to store it there also...

Truth be told, I was quite happy that flightsim.com picked the files up from AVSIM - normally I uploaded to both - and this saved me the trouble!
But there is a grey area of course with some of the other sites charging for better access, and in the extreme case in someone charging for your freeware...
my random thought was: should we be relieved that the material still exists, even if only in bootleg territory?

Same happened with a few of my repaint uploads of the MAAM TBM and the SF8 F-86 to AvSim. I contacted FlightSim library manager becasue the upload to FlightSim used the wrong readme file to build the "discription" on the catalog page.

As you suggested, Tom, it turned out that the FlightSim library staff had uploaded the files, and like Wild Bill - no exclusivity statement - so no big deal... "surprised, not annoyed".

It's just that they used the incorrect readme which didn't make sense because it was for the original model, not the repaint. So, although I don't consider it foul play, there are methods to the madness of uploading files that a 3rd party may not be aware of, or so careful to look for.

I haven't uploaded that much; but what I have, I have uploaded to AVSIM; Flightsim, and Simviation. I must confess that I have even sent them to FSdome; because that is the only download site of the four that works here at work; so much of my stuff has come from there. Besides, if it is going to end up there anyway, as Duckie, points out, I least I can make sure they all properly attribute my work to me.

I've got a ginormous amount of material I've downloaded over the years I could help reupload if need be. I'm a file packrat. I save everything.

I have hundreds of files; not only on my hard drives, but on cds. Thank goodness for being a pack rat (even if I am unorganized).

Duck - Flightsim did the same thing to me when they "pinched" my painted smoke effect pack. They used the readme inside which gave away the "surprise" I advertised in the text on AVSIM. Then they mis-spelled my name on my W88 afcad!:banghead: I emailed them on that one and they corrected the file and replied to my email with an appology. I still have an issue with their capped speed for non-paying members, but that's small change in the big picture. Besides, they've raised that cap and in the last few months, they seem to have lived down that "All Nodes Busy Dot Com" nickname.

I dont mind paying Flightsim.com for better cap rates. They have raised the bar for non paying members.
