AW Whitley Mk V of Bomber Command

Shessi

SOH-CM-2025
Hi folks,
Finally finished this old bu&&er!..;)

Just uploading, firstly many thanks again to Ted Cook for his great work and generosity, without which this wouldn't have been possible. I've just polished the trophy really....

The best bits for CFS2, is multi-LOD. Now with complete opening bomb bays, with this MkV I've also done wing mounted ones, new crew, three new texs. A new DP for short haul and long haul bombing missions. A new leaflet drop 'weapon', I think UT will like that!, so give realistic options in mission planning.

Cheers

Shessi

Shessi,

Thank you so much to you and Jamie for fulfilling one of my longest-held wishes, the triad of bombers the British began fighting with! :applause: :medals:

Now that I am back in CFS2, it's time to roll up the old sleeves and get to work! :very_drunk:

Also, it was a really neat idea creating a "leaflet" weapon. Death by paper cuts! :costumed-smiley-034

Leaflets

Hi Shessi

Great aircraft - slight problem with leaflets

GCS0052.jpg

this is how they appear -- any ideas ?

Ha!, you've discoverd the new defensive weapon, the Whitley Porcupine....or I c*cked-up! ;)

Apologies, I changed the bgl in several locations, but missed this one doh! Attached is the correct one.

Rami,
Glad you liked it, a present for all your library efforts. I have re-uploaded the whole pack having changed this, (the separate Leaflet bgl weapon is the correct). Please could you delete the first upload and leave the second, many thanks.

Cheers

AW Whitley AI version and AI bomb load CFS2

A very low poly AI version of the AW Whitley for use in missions and campaigns. It's only 120Kb in size, and will take quite a few to drop the ol' FR's. Two tex versions one Bomber Command and the other Coastal Command.

I've also done some new smaller ai bombs, based on Bismarck/TR's ai Halifax bomb load, that fit the Whitley and other smaller ac better.

Cheers

Description: A major update of Ted Cooks AW38 Armstrong Whitworth Whitley MkV for Fs9 and CFS2 by Shessi, Oct 2014

Ted Cooks excellent Whitley with modifications, updates and tweaks, these include;

Now Multi-LOD, for better FPS, especially in CFS2, also glightstates and crashcheck removed for CFS2.

Ted didn't model in bomb bay doors or bomb bay. I've modelled these in, so now opening bomb bay doors and internal bays, both main bomb bays and inner wing bays, along with a full mixed bomb load. New crew, new Lewis gun and guns ready.
Updated and modified panel wih Alpahsims 2D and modified Ted's VC.

1) DY-N, a Whitley Mk V of 102 Sqn, Bomber Command, RAF Driffield, 1941, flown by the the late great Leonard Cheshire.

2) GE-B, a Whitley Mk V of 58 Sqn, Bomber Command, RAF Linton on Ouse, June 1940

3) RK-B, a Whitley Mk V of 10 OTU, Bomber Command, RAF Abingdon, 1941.

Also made a new 'weapon'?!, a leaflet drop, for those wishing to carry out 'nickeling' missions, which were early war propaganda leaflet drops over Germany and the occupied countries.

A very low poly ai Whitley bomber, with new ai bomb load.

As this is an AI model so the airfile is for ai use, if you do want to fly it yourself you will have to use the normal airfile (change the name).

AI's Crash

Shessi....

The Whitley Mk V is just fine. No problems that I can find. There is something about the AI version that I must be missing. When I set it up in a mission as an enemy AC it just loses altitude and crashes. I started out in an Me-109 (Player) just behind a group of 5 Whitley AIs flying level at 10,000ft. All of them seemed to fall out of the sky. When I substituted the Mk V non AI, there was no such problem.

Some in-depth analysis...

Mark,

I love the Whitley, and once again want to emphasize that you did an outstanding job. However, being a tweaker, I noticed some inaccuracies in the flight model and made some changes which should make the aircraft fly closer to the numbers.

First, the weight was about 7,000lbs too light. The best weight I could come up with was about 19,310 pounds, most sources were close to this mark.

Second, the fuel capacity was far too low. The Whitley Mark V could hold 1,005 US gallons of internal fuel. So I put 425 gallons in the center tank, and left each wing tank with 290 gallons. I also re-numbered the wing and center tanks. The center is number one, the left and right wing tanks are two and three, and the two auxiliary tanks are four and five, with 79.25 gallons each. These last two were actually bomb-bay tanks, but because they weren't included in the .dp file, I re-configured them to be included in the "standard" fuel load.

And third, the engine specifications were configured for a nine-cylinder radial engine, not the Merlin X. Horsepower ratings were debatable, but most sources pegged the horsepower as either 1,145hp per engine or 1,280hp. I went with the latter, because a few extra ponies are never a bad thing. Accordingly, these are twelve-cylinder engines, with a per-cylinder displacement of 137.25 cubic inches. The compression ratio is 6:1, the maximum RPM is 3,000, and the maximum manifold pressure was 10psi of boost, which assuming normal atmospheric pressure translates to about 50.28 inches of mercury for maximum manifold pressure.

I was able to get off the ground with no issues...and I think she still flies beautifully. Please share your thoughts!

Many thanks Andrew,
Always glad for your tweaks. This is a problem of a sim, there's always a few compromises. Originally I tweaked and played around to get an ac that performed close to the figures within the sim, but is not completely accurate in the figures department.

Now, your new files seem good but I cannot get the beastie to move on a metalled runway with the 6500lb bomb load. The 3500lb load is ok, and 6500lb is still not the max it could carry. With original files it will move etc.

I set the bomb load to be a compromise, as being what they may have carried for the mid distances, the 3500lb was for long distances. The poor old Whitley was not a great performer at the best of times!

Also I tried upping the Cruise Lift scalar from 1.75 to 3.0, this gives a better nose down look when bombs on board, again does this compromise anything else, fuel effieciency etc?

So there's a sweet-spot somewhere there, in between the two files.

Really appreciate the time and effort to get it closer to being as accurate as possible.

Ok W,
Hmmm, I didn't come across this or other people who tested didn't mention this, but ok. I wonder why this happens on some installations? If anyone know the possible reason/answer then please? or just use my standard MkV airfile, thanks.

Cheers

Shessi
