While in France, I bought a very nice book called "USS Corsica", on the B-25 groups based on Corsica. It had so many airfields, that it was seen a an unmovable aircraft carrier.
Lots of nice images, good for the inspiration...
I never knew that AWOL stood for this:
Yes Corsica was a very active giant airport during the WWII. There were also some famous P-47 squadrons there.
I've been there in 2006, in Calvi, where the 2eme Regiment de parachutistes de la Legion Etrangere stands. The military base is in fact an ancient airfield of the WWII, and on some aerial pictures you can still see the runways. Now it's only used for landing when we jump in parachute.
That was so cool, an army truck was bringing us from the base to the local airport (Ste Catherine), there we took the plane (Pilatus PC-6 of course), climbing and lining up with the beach at 12.000 feet, jumping and landing in the military base again. Great mental pictures....
