B-26 Marauder

falcon409

SOH-CM-2025
I started Flying with Willy, Moses, MM and Tako last evening on MP and decided to download the B-26 that Willy was flying so he wouldn't look like a Cessna, lol. This is a pretty nice aircraft, a collaborative effort between RL Clark and Dave Eckert. Aside from the normal FS9 to FSX problems, I also have a chrome VC panel. I've checked the textures and if the VC panel is in there. . .I haven't found it. I've looked through the mdl file, but I found only one LOD2 entry and no amount of editing makes any difference.

Does anyone else have the airplane and if so, were you able to fix the panel issue?

I have a few issues with AI textures , this lead me to a very cheap addon recommended by one off our nzff.org forum members , tho payware at your $19.95 USD , i;m still to get it working but seems to adjust many FS9 models as well .

Wonder if this it the one?

I might try the demo on the older, FS9 Hawai'i airports by Bill Melichar and see if the tree problem is fixed or not. This developer puts out such nice tools, can't wait to see what appears next! :jump:

Ed,

I very recently attempted to port Dave Eckert's Marauder to FSX again and now having them flying around as AI in the Solomons as part of the Solomons beta scenery discussed in another SOH thread on this forum.

Was keen, though, to also get this plane working reasonbly well as a flyer in FSX as it was one of my very favorite WWII bombers to fly in FS9. Bags of character. Met with "limited success" I am sorry to report.

Have the glassy chrome VC panel you mention, lol. Also had some weird holes in the outer wing textures BUT found a fix for this at flightsim in a d/l for an airfield in Germany that included an "FSX AI version" that has some textures that fixes the holes in the wings (you may need to do some color matching around the stars and bars though). Also swapped some better prop blur textures. Still have a problem with nav/landing lights that hang in mid air below the wing (part of the model).

Don't know how to tackle that darned VC panel. May be something to do with the coordinates of the imaginary plane the gauges sit on being in the wrong place, but you and others are more expert than me in this regard.

Would be great to get this to port better into FSX. It looks and flies great and is not too bad on fps.

NNM,
That's probably it. I tried it and I seem to remember this being available a few years ago as freeware, I thought. Anyway, it "kinda works", in that it brings back about 2/3 of the VC panel, but then there's a section to the upper right that's entirely gone and you can see the ground, lol. I think I'll stick with the chrome look, at least it's all there.

Ian,
I tried swapping out some FSX prop textures as well, but this bird has two sets, both with the same name and while what I have looks a little better, I still have the sharp angled edges on the outer edges and it still knocks out anything behind the props.

I'm sticking with what I have because it's still better seeing this airplane in a bomber formation, than 3 or 4 Cessna's and my "Big Self", lol.

For the VC panel try this; change the values in the first line of Vcockpit 01 to read;

Background_color=1,1,1

This changes the panel to black. This works on a number of portovers with "mirrored" panels. Also on some that have transparent panels like the Bf-108. Try different numbers for other shades/colors. I chose black on the Martin, 57 (grey) for 108. Hope this helps.

Happy landings,
John

Falcon , thats the one , mention as yet still to play around with it , i will have a few questions for Doug at www.nzff.org on a speedy setup , currently bogged down a bit .

As for the 26 , one pretty aircraft .. almost the F-16 bomber variant of its day .

Great tip - thanks very much!

The "AI" download you spoke of didn't fix the wing Expat. The Insignia texture is the culprit and if anything was going to work it seems like it would be the original since it had no alpha attached to it. The AI texture does and all that does is make the wing transparent, I tried it on the opposite wing. When you used the AI texture(s) is that all you used or did you use the mdl file as well?

Also, the prop texture is about to drive me nuts. No matter what I use, it knocks out any background except the main fuselage. When I'm in the VC, it blocks the cowling. . .grrrrrr.

Any suggestions?

I'd love to see someone like A2A do a nice B-26 also.

By chance....has the SOH A-26 ever been modified for FSX? I miss flying it.

Ed, sorry, been at work.

I have the gauges and 2d and VC panel now working.

That AI file insignia texture did work for me with the normal FS9 VC model. I did have to restart FSX before it showed up. You can see where I still need to paint it to match the color of the rest of the wing (screenie 1). What I still have is a 100% reflecting nose gear door, so will need to play with the alpha for that I guess.

Props are a pain! The default look pretty good until against scenery or clouds. (screenie 2).

Forget now which texture does the props, lol. Wasn't there a thread that said you actually can fix this by also tweaking the props in the model, using e.g. mdlmat utility - without doing a complete native FSX SKD model build from scratch? Or maybe I just dreamed that . . .

Anyway, this is progress I guess. I also found the takeoff power VERY anaemic compared to FS9 so that means FDE work as well!

Hi Expat,

I've actually got the prop blur looking pretty good, but there is a "background disc", probably a placeholder, that is ruining the prop completely. It's that disc and it's alpha that are probably the culprit here, but there are 35 lines of LOD textures to go through in the mdl and it would sure be nice to know which one I need rather than making a change to each one, saving it, loading FSX and checking. . .nope that's not it, close FSX, go to the next line, change, save, reload FSX and so on, lol. That's why I e-mailed Dave Eckert, to see if he'll answer first of all and then, if he does, if he can give me some good news about how to fix the prop.:salute:
