B-29 Panel problem/question

Hi guys,

I have developed, using FS panel studio, what I consider to be a killer B-29 panel with windows for the cockpit, engineer panel, and bombsight.:wiggle: The first two are about photoreal, with pretty much every guage working. They are truly gorgeous, and I'm not bragging, because I'm just assembling the backgrounds and guages others have already made. That's the true talent. Obviously, many thanks and credits are due - (Yes, there is a question in here.) Here are the windows:

Flight Engineer - (almost all of those guages work)

Bombsight

Herein lies my problem. When I try to use the bombsight, which works fine on many other bomber panels for me, I click the "angle view down" button on the upper right, to try to acquire the computed impact point at 25,000 feet, and I get this VC view.

Any panel Gurus out there know what's going on? I'm using Gnoopy's model, with Sopwith Chameleon's "Lucky Lady" skin, a conventional/nuclear capable .DPfile, and .air file both of which I pretty much made myself. Some of you are intimately familiar with the trials and tribulations I have gone through with the B-29's fuel capacity and range. I never was able to solve that problem, so my solution is a refuel/dump guage - do a couple of "air-to-air refuels" during the mission as a workaround to get a good representation of the B-29's range.

Many thanks in advance for any advice/input,

Ghostrider

Looks like you're using the AF Midway bomb sight. I normally use the Austin bomb sight, but I think the installation should be similar.

With a VC equiped aircraft, I think that you need to edit in the view for the bombsight panel beyond the aeroplane's nose or just under the aeroplane. That should put you beyond the VC and give you full visibility.

In the panel.cfg file, try inserting a [Views] paragraph just under the [Window Titles] paragraph for the bombsight window and then adust the view point to just outside the aircraft.

I think we posted at the same instant! Let me try what you said - thanks, Buddy! I know you're a Superfort man too - I just don't think the B-29 has been done justice yet in CFS2!

Hmmm. Now I can angle my view downward, and see the reticle, but every click on the angle down button brings up my flight engineer window, which I then have to close, and re-open the bombsight to see the new view... Any ideas? The Austin sight is cool, but I don't like the idea of calibrating to one altitude and airspeed.

A wee suggestion

Hi Ghostrider!

May I make a small suggestion? The bmp picture for your 2-d panel comes from a bmp file I saw already and it was taken inside CAF's B-29 "Fifi" cockpit, the only still airworthy B-29 in the world.

At the end of every flight show, CAF B-29 crew members fly an American flag out of "Fifi" pilot window and the picture where this photoreal 2-d bmp was taken, shows clearly the flag pole sticking out of the open window. I don't know who shot the original picture, probably a visitor taking a B-29 cockpit tour (lucky pup!) as customary after every CAF's airshow.

I suggest deleting that tube on the left of the pilot seat in the 2-d bmp, it's CAF US flag pole and it's not realistic seeing that during flight.

Cheers!
KH
:ernae:

HaHa! You mean this flagpole? That's me in Wendover, UT in 2001. I got to take a 30 minute flight on the B-24 "Diamond Lil" that day - what an experience. Sadly, FiFi wasn't giving rides, but it was a great day!

Thanks for the heads up, Kelti - I'll get rid of the pipe in the cockpit. I've also made a number of other improvements since that pic. I got hold of a picture of a real B-29 instrument panel,as well as some other great resources.

You can't give both windows the same numbers -- my guess is that they're both Window02. Make one of the 03 in the cfg's titles header in the top and in the main body.

Hey Guys,

Here are the latest versions: Check out the Norden: Still needs a lot of work, but it's getting better: I'm trying to heavily modify this bombsight, which I believe Pen32Win did for AF=Midway some years ago into a CFS2 "Norden".

Bearcat, here's my newest panel.cfg, still showing the same behavior:

Thanks for all of your help and advice, fellas -

Ghostrider,

Maybe try Window02 for the mosquito gauge bomb site. I have experienced some problems using other than Window02 for the mosquito gauge site.

O

Hey Oglivie,
I think you may be on to something - because the problem I'm having is when I click the view to angle downward - boom - I get the engineer panel instead (currently window 2). Then I have to close it with shift+2, and reopen the bombsight with shift+3, now at the next angle down. Obviously no fun during a bomb run. The funny thing is, it's totally unpredictable. One run, everything works perfectly, the next, some of the down angles, or even all of them will give me the engineer panel instead. It's like it wants the bombsight to be window 2 instead of 3, and runs home to mama, (Window 2) and does what it wants about half the time, I'd say, instead of behaving correctly. Makes me think you might have the answer. Unfortunately, I'm out of town until sunday, but will swap those two windows as soon as I can, and let y'all know how it works out.
Thanks again, everyone for your help!

So it was you?...

HaHa! You mean this flagpole? That's me in Wendover, UT in 2001. I got to take a 30 minute flight on the B-24 "Diamond Lil" that day - what an experience. Sadly, FiFi wasn't giving rides, but it was a great day!

....my congratulations Ghostrider!

I haven't been able to take a vacation over to the US in the last ten years, but I swear when I'll be able to afford one, I want to go and see a CAF airshow more than anything else!

Ah, being able to walk inside any of those fabolous aircrafts, smell the cockpit air and caress a blade of their props just like Rami does in his avatar!

Anyway, your B-29 cockpit picture created the most popular background for B-29 2-d panels, I haven't seen any Superfort 2-d panel done without this picture! I flew any of the free B-29s available with this panel since I downloaded the first one. Until one day I got a picture book by Aerospace titled "American Warbirds" and I saw Confederate Air Force's B-29 "FiFi" standing on the runway with the flag out of her window. I then understood what the misterious pipe going out of the cockpit side panel was....... Neither a fisherman pole nor a pressurization conduit! :d

I can't wait to see the new one you are developing!

Thank you!
KH

Well, Kelti, for years I have felt that the Superfort has had a lot of unrealized potential in CFS2. By the way, thank you for your lovely skins! It was truly a groundbreaking aircraft, and her aircrews were aviation pioneers in every sense of the word. I have developed DP Files which are historically accurate, and functional for coventional loads as well as the atomic weapon developed years ago for CFS2. I'm working on the bombsight, as you can see, to try for an acceptable 'Norden.'. I have done a ton of work on the .air file, seems to be very true to the real McCoy, except the range and fuel capacity, which I have a workaround for. I hope to produce some missions of the strategic bombing campaign against Japan to honor the aircrew's contributions, those of the brave few who tried to oppose them in the face of certain defeat, and also to acknowledge the agony of what happened to the civilians on the ground. I have had a few "moments" with CFS2 which credit how immersive it can be for 'just' a computer sim. One of them was reenacting the Hiroshima mission. It was sobering, and produced a lump in my throat. I was reminded of the words Col Tibbets recalled from the Bhagivad Gida "I am become death, the shatterer of worlds". It's important to remember these things.

Hear! Hear!

I agree 100%.

It's very important to remember. I truly hope the generations following ours, as we were born in the decade after the end of WWII, will remember.

You are welcome for Yashico's B-29 skins, it seemed to me that such a framerate-friendly accurately modeled AI deserved some attention. Yashico's original skin was too generic to my eyes and with this AI performance the sky can really be filled with big formations. William Dickens' B-29 has a good fps performance as well, but Yashico's model looks more "B-29" if you understand what I mean.

When I was a kid, building Airfix's 1/72 B-29A "Eddie Allen" was a true emotion for me. I still have that model and I am quite familiar with her shape and proportions. In fact, Yashico's bird looks great together with Gnoopy's Superfort, the best CFS2 model ever created.

It's too bad talented repainters neglected this aircraft, because I am not a good repainter and a much better job than I did could be done easily. If I did it, it shows it's not difficoult to repaint, only the vertical fin/rudder assembly skin gave me fits and it's the most important detail for B-29s since it hosts the unit markings. I failed with circles and triangles, only 73rd BW letter-box-number didn't come out too bad so there went my choice.

It's very exciting you are talking about realistic Superfort flight models and new missions. The only B-29 campaign I know of is the one designed by Jagdflieger a while ago, from the opposing perspective of a defending J2M3 Raiden pilot.

I flew a few missions of it and I always wound up hanging from a parachute or with CFS2 crawling because B-29 models then available were framerate hogs. I can understand perfectly your emotional reactions while creating B-29 missions.

As I said, I am eager to see and fly your current effort!

Cheers!

Yes, I've been a member as well - not sure if mine is current though - I'm in Salt Lake City visiting my wife's side of the family this weekend - it's offcial: tomorrow morning is Hill AFB Aerospace museum, with lots of warbirds, including a B-29! So I'm excited about that! Pictures to follow...

Oglivie nailed it!

Give that man a cigar! Changing the bombsight to window 2 was the ticket - got rid of all the bad behavior of calling up the engineer panel - now I can change the "down angle" up and down with reckless abandon! So that's great - I have also swapped out the grainy Norden picture that I was using as a background for the closeup, high-res picture of one I took at Hill Aerospace Museum this past weekend!

Now my only remaining bombsight issue is this: as you can see in my second set of screenshots, the aiming reticle disappears behind my 'peephole' in the bombsight. It's like the 3-d outside world, the background .bmp, and the aiming reticle are "stacked" in the wrong order, if that makes sense.

Any ideas on this one? I'm trying to edit the gauge itself in panel studio, but no joy so far.

Ghostrider,
I think this is the ticket to solve the issue. This is a copy from Post #10 with changes in bold. I included Window02 as a changed item and gave the forward view direction further down angle to 12.0 so that the panel does not obscure the runway as much. I think the 2d panel may work out a bit better at the lower angle, but see if it works for ya.
