The main airstrips of 20th Air Force were on Tinian, Saipan and Guam in the Mariana Island chain.

Two airstrips were built on Tinian - North Field and West Field.

The following link to the 20th Air Force Association provides details as to which Squadrons and Groups were based on what Islands.

No B-29's operated from any airfields on Okinawa. After the battle major construction commenced in preparation for the final battle for Japan. Ten airfields were constructed, namely Awase, Bolo, Chimu, Futems, Ie Shima, Kadena, Motobu, Naha, Yonabaru and Yontan. Most were used by -47, P-51 , B-25 and B-24 units. The intention was for the 8th Air Force (of Europe fame) to relocate to the airfields on Okinawa and commence operations there with B-29's in September. However the war ended before that occurred.

Kadena AB was the operational B-29 base of the Okinawa island chain (Ryukyu Islands). And it never served the B-29 during WW2. It came online in '47 and served B-29 units during the Korean conflict only. If you're building this for historically-accurate CFS2 WW2 relevance, it would be a waste of time.

The only operational B-29 Pacific bases (not counting Asia) were in Iwo Jima and the Marianas. At present for CFS2, we have the B-29 bases of Guam Northfield, Tinian and Saipan. I have them all installed but i only activate them when flying B-29's in FF sessions (don't have any collections of missions yet). They are all circa 1945 works so they don't need activation unless i'm flying missions in that period with other aircraft that take me near them. They're all well-done projects, but also frame hogs created with older design tools and techniques.

I have gone through the scenery archive but i have not found any airbases
with any title reffering to B29 or bomber airbases etc In the Marrianas, can yoyu please point to them since i want to check them out.I will research and google into Iwo jima and asia since i want to develop only cfs2 ww2 related bases for the aircraft now that our FPS has considerably improved.

I still have your email addy...that might be easier for both of us because i'm not sure if the old links are still good or not. Have you changed you addy since '05? If so, send me a PM....

Yeah, definitely Iwo Jima, Tinian, Saipan, and Guam is where you want to be for B-29s. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to get to see "FiFi", one of the last flying B-29s at Wendover, UT which is where the 509th Composite Group trained before deploying to Tinian for the atomic missions.

Take the bases i sent ya, install them, then fly them to get the coordinates and layouts. Take an overhead screenie of each one at 10000 ft to get a good layout view. That's how you get your original redesign templates. You can always update and modify the template as you acquire new details and info later.

The closest addon replica i can recommend is the dcg_japan set for Dynamic Campaign Generator. Its Iwo Jima layout is the best copy i've seen in CFS2 for late '45. It got all the goodies for B-29 ops and Mustang support - lots of buildings, hangars, wide and long runways and a scattering of old macro trees.

Here's a good outline for USAAC bases in the PTO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Air_Forces_in_the_Central_Pacific_Area

I was wrong about the operational date of Kadena with B-29's. It was August 1945:

316th Bombardment Wing, 5 Sep 1945-21 Jun 1948

333d Bombardment Group B-29 Superfortress, 5 Aug 1945-28 May 1946

Researching into Iwo jima even though i still have a lot of reading to do i get the impression that motoyama airfield was used only as an emergency landing field going and coming back from japan to the 3 airfields in the marianas, can you please correct me if wrong,do you have a good overview image of the strip?i have found so far only close ups of B29's on the dirt coral runway nothing around of any significance. i am still googling hoping to find a good site with dimensions etc

....Researching into Iwo jima even though i still have a lot of reading to do i get the impression that motoyama airfield was used only as an emergency landing field ...

That's about right....emergency divert for wounded bombers and forward airfield for P51 escorts and long range recon. The best means of obtaining obscure details for airbases when you can't find them with Google is to contact CFS/FS scenery makers who've already done the bases, like Maskrider, the scenery guys at DCG and Rolf (if he's still around). Rols's bases are found at SimV...just search under his name.
