Back to XP

Well I finally got XP pro 32 bit running on my system. And I'm very happy that most of the issues I was having with running CFS2 under Windows 7 64bit are gone.

I decided to dual boot because I was getting tired of having to 'nerf' CFS2 just for it to run on Windows 7.

One issue I'm not having under XP is that I can't 'force anti-aliasing and have CFS2 work in fullscreen mode when getting in to the game. All I get is a black screen if I do. Its a card/video card driver issue and I haven't tried different drivers yet, and it 'possible' could be fixed by different drivers.

One work around I have found that seems to do well is starting the sim in window mode, then switching to full screen when I'm flying. I get the fullscreen in game just fine with AA and AF on.

It is a minor annoyance, but one I am willing to put up with after all the headaches I was getting with Windows 7. It made it to where I didn't even want to play CFS2.

Hi Wulf,
From what you are describing it seems yes it is your graphics card and it's settings that are the probs.
Are you a Nvidia or AMD/ATi man? If Ati then use the Catalyst centre to set your AA and the full screen mode.

Try setting your CFS2 size/resolution to the same as your desktop. Also it may be you're you're using a 16 bit graphics setting in CFS2 and you need it to be in 32 bit.

Just another thought, and it probabaly won't work, but have you tried to alter the running properties of CFS2 from the icon i.e. run in fullscreen mode?

Cheers Shessi

I'm running a GTX460. I never had this issue when I was running a 6600GT, 6800GS, X1950XT, or a 8800GTS 512.

In CFS2 I have it set for full resolution 1650X1050 set for 32bit (same as my desktop), with AA, TL, and MIP mapping on.

Like I said it seems that my card just doesn't like starting CFS2's menu in full screen. Which doesn't surprise me. I say that because while the in game resolution matches my monitor, the menu resolution doesn't.

I am able to start a flight up in window mode and then switch to full screen when I'm flying. Its a annoyance, but like I said one I am willing to live with.

I haven't tried a newer driver set. Because when I tried two newer driver sets with Windows 7 my in game performance was cut in half and if I hit the 'q' key to turn off the sound, my performance would crawl down to 8FPS! Just to give you a comparison, when I fly DBolt's Stock-revamp Corsair out of stock henderson going towards the mountains in VC mode I am getting 201FPS with medium clouds. That is with VSync disabled (With it enabled it effects how fluid and smoot the aircraft flies to me), AF set to 16X, and AA set to 8X. I am currently running nVidia drivers 258.96

This on a systems ran by a Intel I-7 930 at 2.8GHZ with 6GB of RAM, a dedicated soundblaster sound card, and a GTX460 with a 256bit memory interface and a full gig on on board video RAM.

Its a driver issue, but an issue I doubt nVidia is willing to look into. I had even worse issues when I tried running an ATI 5850 card with Win7. CFS2 wouldn't even run in game unless I removed the 2D panel.

Now I like dynamic and detailed VCs as much as anyone else, but I have some 2D panels that I think are awesome works of art!

Open your CFS2.cfg with notepad and put this in the section near the top named [MAIN]:

[MAIN]
ShowLogo=0
ShowMovie=1
RUNNINGBADHW=0
Location=0,0,1680,1050
HideMenuNormal=1
HideMenuFullscreen=1
Maximized=0
Display_Fractional_Minutes=1

I have a GTS 250, only a few notches below the GTX 460. For me, using the setting of "Application-Controlled" in both AA and AF through the Nvidia control panel seems to work best universally for all sims and games. As much as i want to max out the settings beyond this, CFS2 works best in this envelope. And since its my main flight sim, i keep this setting for all others as well. For test purposes, try that.

That works, but the visual quality isn't as good as when I override it. I've been able to override CFS2 with all of my previous cards.

Wulf,
Could it be the card itself? I'm running a Evga GTX460 1 gig card with 266.58 drivers and nvidiaInspector under win7 x64 and don't have any problems with cfs2 (3 installs) in fullscreen.
I also run the same res 1680x1050 x32, and the visual quality is outstanding including all menu's. This is using all ingame settings under global settings in nvidiaInspector. By chance is your card an Evga and bought before Aug 2010? They did put out a bios update with some bug fixes and a preformance boost for cards bought and built before the date above. My card was built after that date so i have the latest bios.

Well I tried the 266.58 drivers , and I got same results at when I tried newer drivers under windows 7.

The max frame rate I get with VSync off is 65frams, and if I hit 'Q' to quiet the sim, my frame rate drops down to 14FPS. Hitting 'Q' again does not improve performance.

When I roll back to 258.96 my max frame rate exceeds 200, and hitting 'Q' does not effect my frame rate at all.

I did not bother in checking to see if the 266.58 drivers would display the menus when I'm overriding CFS2's visual settings.

It may be a driver issue, or a card issue, but for now I can deal with a minor issue and running the older drivers that work.

Update:
I went messing around with the AA settings on my card and I found something 'really' weird. CFS2 runs in full screen mode, munues and game when AA is set to 8Q, 16Q, or 32. But it won't when I set it to 4, 8, or 16. Why? I dunno! But looks like I won't have that oddball issue anymore!
