My two cents,

As a history teacher, this is something I fight tooth-and-nail on. I have my students read Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, the Diary of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird, and All Quiet on the Western Front. I believe these books are essential to understanding modern American and World History.

I speak to the parents every year, along with the school board and the principal. I have not been heavily challenged yet, even by parents of varying ethnicity, culture, and religion. We discuss these things and come to an understanding. I also refuse to jump onto the Politically Correct bandwagon, frankly I think it's tremendously overblown. I respect all students, parents, administrators, and everyone else the same. No one gets special treatment or consideration unless they earn it.

With the amount of books we're banning, pretty soon we'll be lighting the bonfires next.

The "Catcher in the Rye" is on the list? That is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE books!!!

Yes, it has some offensive language, but geez, give me a break! It's part of LIFE!!

I remember reading passages from that book in my high school library, and busting out laughing!!!

It is GREAT!!!

Is On the Origin of Species still banned in some schools in America?

"My Friend Flicka" : A female dog was referred to as a "bitch" in the text

Well duh! That's what female dogs are called for heaven's sake!

That's ridiculous! And worrying at the same time...

But Newton's rules of gravity and laws of motion are allowed there?

Or do they also collide with some strange metaphysical "theories" such as Creationism?

Crazy...

Cheers,
Markus.

Note to self: Try to import some old german bedtime stories into the 'States...

Who didn't like those? :d

Some of the schoolboards here in Texas were going to allow texts on evolution and creationism side by side but not sure how that played out. Since neither one can be readily proven, it would seem to be a fair compromise.

I can't recall ever reading anything bible based in public school back in the 1970's. I got that in Church and Sunday school growing up.

At the risk of being the subject of a ban myself you could say why doesn't Texas teach Christianity and Judaism and Islam and Hinduism and Buddism etc etc as none of those can be readily proven either. Maybe they already do, I'm not sure how (or if) Comparative Religious Studies is taught in the States.

But back to banning books ....... here's a short film.

Amen.

This thread isn't going anywhere good. In fact it is one of the reasons I left for a few months...

Well, it would be ironic if this one was locked but there you go.
I'm sure it will just die a natrural death :monkies:

In High School I was required to read Animal Farm, 1984, Brave New World to name a few. Those delt with expicit subjects but they were very good books and I am glad I had to read them. I was supposed to read For Whom The Bell Tolls but they ran out of copies for the entire class so they gave us one called In Country about a young woman who had a relative who had come back from Vietnam suffering from Agent Orange effects, it was fairly expicit too and delt with quite a few negative opinons on government and war...very good book as well. [sarcastic voice] <SARCASTIC voice>If they are going to ban things because of explicit language, are they going to ban Huck Finn too? The Scarlet Letter deals with adultry and could be banned with those guidelines..

Also in HS I had a comparitive religions class that was one of the most interesting classes I had taken. With a class like that that explores all beliefs, I am all for 'religion' in school, let the kids decide what path works for them.

agreed this thread isnt headed in a positive direction but hope everyone can use good judgment and comment without turning it into a flame war.

Anyway thats my 2 rubles
