Bare metal Basler BT-67

JensOle

SOH-CM-2023
I have always liked the look of the Basler BT67 reworked DC-3/C-47, the new powerplant and other refinements blend in nicely with the old DC-3 shape. I have seen the DOSAW BT-67 several times in Afghanistan and the BT certainly has an extended flight envelope compared to the legacy DC-3 because of the extra power.

After seeing some pictures from the remanufacturing process I got tempted to work on a paint of C-47 "FAC1659" which is one of the reworked Colombian birds as it looked during the first test flight. The screenshots are very early in the paint process and the bare metal look has had very little attention yet. The new metal areas painted in green primer include the extended fuselage and sections which have been replaced. Something to fly out of the Basler facility Oskhosh Wittman airport

Very, very nice.

There's something about the vintage look of the DC3 with those engines...that "paint" will enhance the combination even more.

Thanks!

I'm no expert in bare metal, but I'm trying my best.... latest wip screens under. Any advice?

Looks awesome.....maybe some shading on various metal panels.....different shades of aluminum? Maybe some drop inner shadow on the primed panels to give them a little bit of a more defined separation from the bare metal.

Hi and thanks. Why not have a look at how the spinners of the Thai texture are done both in bt67_1_T and bt67_1_T_SPEC (sorry about the file names), and especially check what's done in the respective alpha channels. Take it from there -- I don't suppose you want it quite as shiny and reflective.

Jens I think you are still using the old spec maps. Either replace them by new ones or just replace them with all gray textures in the darkness corresponding with the gloss you want.

Cheers,
Huub

Hello,

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it.

Huub, the spec files are all custom made for this repaint. What I suppose you are thinking about is the Fuerza Aerea Colombiana title on the fuselage. When Basler got this C-47 from the FAC it was in silver and full FAC paint with the title, roundel and cheatline running between the FAC lettering and windows. The decals except for the tail number were removed, but it was still very visible because of the darker colour of the metal. I have tried to replicate this in the textures.

I have used the same colour shade for the bare metal, alpha channel and spec files as John used on the latest Mustangs as a starting point. I might make it a bit les reflective though.

Hi Jens I was indeed referring to the titles on the fuselage. It might be worth to try a bit texturing these letters, for instance some spickles, to make them look "less present" a bit.

But as I already said a very interesting repaint, which will definitely find a place on my hard disk!

Cheers,
Huub

Hello,

The paint is starting to come together. Some minor errors in the panel lines layout of the paintkit on the right side between the cockpit and extended section have been fixed as well. Lots of detail work on the fading/weathering/ changed metal panels on this particular Basler (nr 29) have been included.

I would like to hear if any are interested in helping me with a look at the texture set before release? 4 eyes tend to do a better job than 2...
