Best Freeware Connie

Well, that's not difficult. Manfred Jahn & Co did the whole series and they are wonderful.

I second that reccomendation, I am not a big civil aircraft flyer but I do like Manfred and teams connie's.

Here's something from AVSIM to get you started:

Category: Flight Simulator 2004 - Original Aircraft
Lockheed L-749 Constellation Base Pack

File Description:
Dimensionally identical to the first-generation Constellation (L-049), the post-war 749 had more powerful engines, additional fuel tanks, strengthened landing gear, and much improved performance. Equally good for shuttle hops and long-range flights, L-749 Connies entered service with major 1950s carriers such as Eastern, TWA, B.O.A.C., Air France, KLM, Quantas, and many others. Another customer was the Air Force, which placed an order for ten aircraft (designated C-121A) in 1948.

Included in this sim package are seven models and five textures, covering variants with and without "Speedpak" cargo pannier, weather radar, and "jetstack" exhausts. KLM texture by Jaap de Baare (representing "Flevoland", the last 749 in flying condition today). TWA texture N6003C "Star of America" by Hans Herrmann. EAL, Air France, and MATS textures by Manfred Jahn (including "8609", a frequent visitor to airshows all over the world until 2005). Panel textures and additional gauges by Diego S. Barreto, model and VC by Manfred Jahn, panels, gauges, and animations by Hansjoerg Naegele, flight dynamics by Luis Pallas, wingview angles, lights, and exhaust effects by Bill Tyne and Roland Berger, checklist and documentation by Volker Boehme, flight test and handling research by Stefan Werner. The 749 project has been hosted by Tom Gibson's Calclassic forum at http://calclassic.proboards55.com.

Thanks for all the votes for our little project.

Volker recently answered the what do I need question over at CalClassic quite completely:

Hi all,

as promised yesterday, here's a list of the files required to get a current install of the Constellation series (as of Feb. 2013). It does not include minor variations like the ex-WV-1 or the spray planes. All files are available for download at Flightsim.Com.

L-49:
Basepack: lockheed_l-49_v1_0.zip
Additional weather radar model: l-49_weather__radome.zip

L649/749:
Basepack: lockheed749.zip
Improved VC textures by Jan Visser: 749vcpaint.zip
Improved visual model, required by some, but not all repaints: 749_models_update.zip
Upgraded flight dynamics: l749_fde_upgrade.zip
Further improved flight dynamics that give better handling on taxi: constellation_taxi_fde_upgrade.zip

L1049:
Basepack 1049G airliner: l1049g.zip
Basepack 1049H freighter/combi: l1049h.zip
Performance charts: super_constellation_performance_charts.zip
Flight dynamics update: super_constellation_fde_upgrade.zip
Again, further improved flight dynamics that give better handling on taxi: constellation_taxi_fde_upgrade.zip

RC/EC-121 Warning Stars require the installation of these basepacks.
EC-121D, EC-121T: wv2-1.zip
RC-121C, EC-121M: wv2-2a.zip
Search radar to pick up AI traffic (FS9 only): warning_star_radar_upgrade.zip

L-1649A:
The latest release is current and does not need any further add-ons: lockheed_l-1649a_4_0.zip

L-1249 Turboprop Constellation: No upgrade so far on Manfred's original release.

I hope this helps you to.

Best regards,
Volker

This pretty much gets you everything from the L-049 to the L-1649A

Cheers

darn it Wombat! you've got me drooling for the Breitling Connie at RIAT this year now!

i'd agree though the connies mentioned here are the best there are (in my opinion) they really take you back to an era when flying was about the crew and not the electronic 'gizmos', for long flights map-plotting, dead-reckoning and astro-nav are always a fun experience in these girls, as is the VFR Element... things like saying to yourself "According to the map, in 20 minutes we should pass this bend in the river at our 10 o'clock" great looking, great flying and a real joy to have in the virtual hangar!

Thanks for that list Stefan. The number of models, updates and what not of this superlative effort is now well organized.

Military Connies

Yes it is. In fact there are numerous military skins and models available.

For the model you ask about, look for:

Volker deserves the thanks for the list, I simply copied his post here :)

One more word on our entire series. For anyone who has not yet flown them these are rather complex aircraft despite their by modern standards old fashioned systems. Or rather because of them.
We took great pains to recreate these airplanes as faithfully as possible, within the limits of FS. That means they do need a bit of pilot training to be flown correctly and successfully.
There are certain failures built into these aircraft that correspond to bad things happening in the real airplane if certain parameters were exceeded.
For example if you simply shove the throttles to the firewall and leave them there you will experience engine failures. The R-3350 is a very powerful engine, but it also needs to be managed carefully.

Do yourself a favor and read the documentation we provide with each aircraft and take a little time to get to know these ladies. They are different enough to read all of them.

One other feature is the Status Window or virtual Flight Engineer you can access via right click on the check list icon. This gives easy access to information that the FE would normally provide to the PIC and especially in the beginning lets you see if you are doing things within the limits.
Red engine indications.....bad.
You can also fix a common early flight PIC created failure of the hydraulic system if you extend flaps or gear above their limit speeds. Right clicking the red hydraulic status will send the virtual FE out with a roll of duct tape and refill the reservoir if you are now below the Vfe or Vle speeds.

And finally a note to the folks who like to modify things. In this case you may want to leave well enough alone, because in our experience many user mods end up causing the hidden systems that make these aircraft work to fail. The panel.cfg and aircraft.cfg files do need to match in order for the systems to work.

Cheers

+ 2

And I also recommend 2 more things.

if you really want to master a Connie (pls think you do the job of 3 people in the real plane)

a.)read the FSAviator Propliner tutorial at Cal Classic
b.)Plan your descend-->Connies are very clean and therefore if you take an Jetliner descend approach you will come in way too fast.Yes in some of them the main wheels serve as air brakes, but if you engage them to early-hydraulic pressure will fail and then you will have lots of additional fun

Best regards

Roland

Hi,
Just a mention of John Howard White and FSDzigns wonderful model.

Though I don't fly that aircraft anymore since the release of Manfred's models, I do still use the soundset included in that aircraft for all Connies. It is simply spot-on!

Well, I prefer the DC-6/7...

*Runs out of thread giggling*

:icon_lol:

(I all seriousness, the Connie is great team effort. Not my cup of tea, but a great regardless. It's also amazing that it still receives the occasional update!)

Well, not every one can handle three pieces of tail at the same time ;) For those who can't there are the Dougs
