Beware the peanut brittle

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
I just had a piece of the best peanut brittle ever...father-in-law #3's sister made it from scratch.....it was delicious. After I ate it, I felt something sticking out between two of my left side upper molars....so I got a toothpick to dig out the piece of peanut brittle...only to find that it was not peanut brittle...it was a part of my tooth. I'm not really surprised as that tooth has been in need of a root canal for the past 5 years...so I guess I will have to go to the dentist and have the rest of the tooth cut out...which is cheaper by far than a root canal.

I ripped out my permanent retainer on an Abba Zabba... that was one of the more embarrassing visits to the orthodontist.:running:

I feel yout pain Obio. I lost part of a tooth eating a yogurt of all things. I went to the dentist and was told it would cost between £350 and £700 to do all of the work, root canal filling, rebuilding the tooth, a crown etc, or £17.50 to take it out.

I now have a slight dent in my lower right jaw where the tooth used to be and a lot more money in my bank account.

The dentist will have to wait a bit longer for his new Mercedes.

PS. I detest peanuts in any form. I'm not deadly allergic to them like some poor souls, but my body violently rejects them. Last time I ate something with peanuts in was at my in laws, I redecorated their brand new carpet and put everyone off their food :barf:

$950 for 1 crown I am having done,no root canal.Best part? ....I need about 10 total plus a $7000 bridge.Yahoo,total spent in 2009=$6200.Before any of the above.:d

Dentists are the single biggest predators in the medical profession. Closely followed by Vets.
I can say that as I come from a long line of dental professionals and I have dogs. lol

I will come to the defence of vets, well my vet anyway.

I agree veterinary expenses can be high, but when our cat fell ill he had to be seen by the vet. Our suspicion of diabetes was confirmed (my wife is a type 1 diabetic and had had the condition for over 45 years, so we have considerable experience of the illness). Of course we didn't have insurance, but that was and still is our choice.

Long story short, the cat's diabetes was only a symptom of a disease called acromegally. High doses of insulin only kept blood sugar levels stable, but very high. We had to visit the vet at least four times a week, sometimes twice a day, over a period of two and a half years. I did all of the blood tests instead of the having them done at the vets, a massive saving in costs.

Our vet gave us a huge discount on the special food and sold us near expiry date insulin very cheaply (a bottle of insulin only lasted us a week and normal retial price was arouind £42, we paid something like £15 a bottle, sometimes less if the bottle had been used for a hospital patient).

We gave up adding up what our cat cost us in his last three years of life, but it was well over £10,000, but if our vet charged us the full rate for every thing it would have been well over £30,000, he rarely charged us consultaion fees, but as he said, he learnt far more about acromegally treating our cat than he did in his previous 12 years experience.

I believe you really have to shop around. I took one of our cats to a new vet. The first said he had to take out a couple of teeth. I had just paid about 1,200 for the same work on another cat. The new vet said the cat's teeth were fine and to bring him back for a cleaning in a few months.

A girl came into the shop and told me she had been to her regular dentist and had been told all her teeth were fine. She just got ins. and went to another dentist. He told her she needed 8 fillings. :ernae:

Less than two weeks ago on the day before we were to fly to Hawaii, one of my lower crowns started to trouble me. I was lucky to get in and see my dentist, who referred me to an endontist. I ended up with a root canal which was very tender for several days.

It appears that the previous crowned tooth was not properly done since the tooth under the crown was decaying, meaning there was air under the crown to feed the cavity. Because we were flying the next day, I was very concerned since the change in pressure can cause the air to expand and the tooth to hurt. I had experienced a problem last September when at Tahoe at 6,000 ft, so now I know why the tooth bothered me.

Anyways, the root canal is done and I had a nice Christmas, flight and all. I have yet to schedule my dentist who will have to remove the old crown, repair the tooth, and make a whole new crown. No senior discount on this procedure, nor refund on the prior work. It's definitely going to hurt my wallet not to mention missiing work and some of the pain and inconvience. :salute:

Peanut Brittle and Popcorn....two of the most expensive snacks you can buy!!! That one unpopped kernal or partially popped one will get you every time....:pop4:

Yep... POPCORN :pop4:. I have broken two (2) seperate teeth whilst eating popcorn. Both resulted in a crown and one had a filling in it that was older than dirt... that tooth needed a root canal in addition to the crown.

Other foods that have either broken or extracted fillings from my teeth:

English Toffee (The Real Stuff) and a Snickers Bar... a very long time ago. But NEVER peanut brittle. Suprisingly, and I am a big fan of home made peanut brittle. So it's bound to happen, now that you have mentioned it.:engel016:
