Big Quake in New Zealand...

Just heard on the news about this.

Up in Tauranga I didn't feel a thing, but the lower parts of the North Island did.

Some pics on the TV news showed parts of buildings destroyed, cars partly buried under rubble. No reported deaths.

Already reports of looting ...... !!

Long way off from Auckland, so nothing here, some of the pictures show a fair amount of damage in Christchurch though.

The Big One which must happen at some point, is in Wellington, which sits astride a fault line.
When it lets go, the neighbours will be found a few hundred meters north next morning.

Just ruined my image of New Zealanders! I thought you all were a pretty civilized group of folks.
Looting just doesn't seem like it should be associated with NZ nor Australia.
 
Just woke up to the news this morning....saw on the TV this morning the damage from the quake, no doubt that there will be more to come as news coverage on the quake widens out further. Didn't feel the quake.

@devildog,we are. It wouldn't be any different if it happened in your country.
 
mrogers, no, we have thugs in the US. Looting starts as soon as the rumbling starts in the bigger urban areas.
 
I live in Dunedin, about 300 km below Christchurch. no I didn't hear the quake. We heard of it from our Aunt in Chicago way before we saw it on the news. Scary though - 7.1 on the scale - the 1931 Napier earthquake killed 256, this one killed none. (Napier quake was 7.8 on the scale) Any ideas why?
 
Remember the Richter scale is logarithmic; an earthquake measuring 7 has 10 times the energy of a 6.
Anything over 7 is actually a hell of a quake...
 
My niece's husband is a kiwi from Christchurch area. Saw him on Saturday, he has family living outside of Christchurch. They reckon the house was shaking all over the place and just about everything that was on a cupboard got tossed off and smashed....no injuries. The latest I hear on the news is the area is forecast to be smashed with a nasty big storm tonight (Sunday).

Dunedin is getting that storm right now! Whoa is it powerful. Macandrew Bay Weather station reporting 100Km/h wind, and thats about 1 KM down the road from from us. Barometric pressure was at 30.00 in.Hg at noon, has droppeed to about 29.00 now. Its real scary out here. Our house is actually shaking a little.
 
As the news filters out, you come to realise this was quite a biggie.
Ten times bigger than the Haiti quake in January.
100,000 homes damaged.
CBD locked down, army has moved in to assist.
Areas still without water, power and sewer services.

But they are a pragmatic and stoic lot, the southerners.
Meanwhile, Wallabies head coach, and noted Cantabrian, Robbie Deans told NZPA he'd had to make calls from South Africa to check on family after word filtered through of the situation in Christchurch.
"I checked with my son at 6am, he was pretty relaxed and not too concerned. They'll all good," Deans said after his arrival back from South Africa.
Deans was also fairly relaxed about the extensive damage suffered by the historic family homestead at Darfield, above the earthquake's epicentre. It is going to have to be rebuilt.
"There's been a fair bit of material damage but you can replace that," shrugged the Wallabies coach.
