Black Canopy

Is there a way of fixing the black canopy effect on port overs? One that is fairly easy for a 'not so savvy' computer person. :)

Are you talking about black glass?
My understanding is that the alpha channel of the glass item has to be inverted (doesn't make a great deal of sense to me, either) for SP2/Acceleration owners.

Those of us stuck at SP1 don't seem to have the problem with port-overs, but there are some aircraft that show opaque glass when seen from the outside instead.

Yes, black glass (black windscreens in fact), and yes I do have SP2. Aplha channel? Sounds double dutch to me! :)

Install a little tool nammed DXTBMP (google wiill tell you), it allows you to edit a texture.
Then you have to find which texture is the one used by the canopy (use the browse function in DXTBMP). Once found, open the texture, the Alpha channel is that little black&white picture (sometimes just a plain square) on the right. In the menus, you have an option for inverting the Alpha Channel. Do it and save.

Hiya Pips http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=17313
check this thread, I have been messing about with similar issues with SP1. This one is the 'technical' solution. have not monkeyed with it yet, but if the tools haven't any compatability issues, it should'nt be tough. For ports, I have found a simpler method. Open up the texture folder, and look for the glass texture. Some times its clearly titled, some times not. Some models will only have the glass files in the 'master textures' folder, if the model alises textures to keep file size down. You'll see, in that case, usually the 'texture.' folder will have a whole whack of textures in, the folders for other variants will have 4 or 5 texture files in their folders. Identify the suspected file, and copy it off for safe keeping. Find a glass texture in one of the other models you have that works. Size of the file dosen't seem to make a big difference. Rename it the same as the texture you want to substitute , drop it into the texture folder , you'll be asked to 'over write?' select yes, boot it up and see if you've hit the right texture. If your glass is fixed, you've got it. If not , go back to the offending texture folder, and try again. Its pretty straight forward with bit map format, because you can usually see exactly whats in the texture, instead of just an icon and file name, and are usually marked 'texture.glass' ,or 'texture.canopy' . With .dds format, its a little more problematic, as you only see an icon, and the labeling is often not intuitive, glass textures are often, or related to, the ' Fresnel Ramp.dds' or 'specular.dds' or, some times you'll find 3 different files marked ' glass.dds'. some times you get lucky with those, and some times you dont. I'm still trying to figure out the Wyvern and Catalina, but I think those 2 will need the more 'Technical solution. Also, do a search of the downloads, as the are some alternate textures downloaded for canopys and props, like for Guy's F4U-7. Happy hunting!
3/7 charlie...... Hey SkippyBing;which dds. is the Wyvern external glass texture?

To view DDS files you need to download this little utility....

....ignore the fact that it says it's a 'beta' as it works just fine as a DDS file viewer. I would be lost without it when doing repaints and use it all the time to find which file is which. I even set it up in XP to be the 'default' app to open DDS files so that double-clicking the file automatically opens 'DDS Viewer' for me. Use the arrow buttons at the top to navigate back and forth through the folder you want to look at.

Thanks for the suggestions kind sirs, appreciate it. I'll grab the tools and give them a try.

If you hear screams it means I'm not having fun!! :)
