Black Square Beech Starship (Pre-release Preview Thread)

Via Just Flight's Facebook page, announced a couple hours ago:

"We can now confirm that the release date for the the Black Square Starship FS2020 & FS2024 will be Thursday June 19th and pricing will be set at £39.99/€44.95/$54.99"

Oy. Just Flight and their P3D pricing.

Oh well. It’s totally fair for all the custom systems, but I’ll wait for the holiday sales most likely. Bugs will be swatted more by then anyway.

Mike's FS9 Starship was a lot of fun to fly, even if it did use an aliased King Air panel for simplicity. I'll never fault Black Square for their center-of-the-Earth systems depth (I have a few of their GA entries), but I have no interest in flying this, or any other plane that takes 20 minutes to get the cockpit ready for a 15 minute flight. Gimme a nice GA with some horsepower and good systems depth and I'm happy.

It's gonna be a long week, especially now that the hype train is truly rolling now.
I listened to this preview while I was mowing today, so I didn't get to watch but Nick, the Black Square lead dev (only dev?) sounds like a really cool dude and that this is a huge project for him.
The part where he explains that he asked every starship owner what they loved about the aircraft and then went about recreating it is just magical. I'm really looking forward to indulging the fruits of his labor!

After watching this for a while, you forget it's a simulation and not the real thing. An impressive amount of work.

I bought it and so far have flown about two hours. As expected from Black Square, it's superb. I noticed a few very very minor issues...which might also be issues with my understanding of the systems...but no show-stoppers. It flies even better than it looks. Very stable and forgiving, although not overly responsive to control inputs. This seems to track with real pilot reports.

To be honest, if you've got any experience with 'complex' FS aircraft the systems shouldn't be too difficult to wrap your head around, at least for the purposes of getting it airborne and flying a route. The one difference to really be aware of: avionics temps. JF's excellent short video should help clarify.

If you want to do it by the book, it'll definitely take some practice. The excellent manual will always be your friend. Definitely some differences in workload-level compared to more modern machines, but that's to be expected. Worst-case scenario, that's why the FS gods gave us a 'pause' button. It does amaze me that the Starship is single-pilot certified IRL, because I felt about 10 miles behind the plane with all my flights so far. Information overload...and you can't harness all that info as intuitively if you're used to more modern aircraft.

So that people don't have to sort through 50+ posts to find post-release information, I'm going to close this preview thread and start a new release thread.
