Blowing Smoke--fixing a problem with the Ki-46-III "Dinah"

Akemi Mizoguchi of Japan, a.k.a. “Hagochu” is a wizard of CFS2 aircraft modeling, which doesn’t mean that he is immune to an occasional mistake.

A case in point is his flight model of the Mitsubishi Ki-46-III, which has a fault built into the start sequence. Air-cooled radials, in particular, generate a lot of smoke during their first few seconds of operation and his flight model does replicate this, but there is a problem.

When you start the #1 engine, the smoke cloud is generated on the right side of the “Dinah” and when you start the #2 engine, a smoke cloud is generated on the plane’s left side. This is, of course, backwards. I found that to be irritating.

If you have an AIR file editor, you can easily correct this fault by editing it, changing just two parameters:
File --> mz-ki46.air
Section --> 1002 Engine Locations
Parameters:
reset “Engine 1 Lateral” from 75 to -75
and reset “Engine 2 Lateral” from -75 to 75

Don’t forget to “save” your changes.

This doesn’t seem to affect the engine controls. For example, the #1 Magneto Switch still controls the left engine and the #2 Magneto Switch still controls the right engine.

You could make this change by editing the AIR file with a hex editor if you’re willing to do a little more work.

BTW, Hagochu has recently posted the complete flight model(Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2) for his new Kawasaki Ki-45-KAIc(“Nick”) on his website, which is at the following URL: http://hago003.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index.html .

There is a link to it from “Hangar #1”, which belongs to the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force.

I don’t know whether or not this new flight model has yet been uploaded to our beloved “Sim-Outhouse”.

Thanks, Steve. Another useful entry for the Tip file.

In a similar vein, I have several models where the engine start sounds are opposed to the real start up sequence i.e. when the port engine starts I can hear it in right side headphone (and yes, I do have the 'phones on the right way round

).

Anyone know if this is curable through the air file or some other setting?

Cheers

Re: Mismatched Sounds

Blohm-und-Voss, that's an interesting problem. I really don't know anything about it right now, but I'll do some "legwork" and get back to you...
