Bob Hoover saves a P-51......

This is an outstanding story, and one I will tell for years to come!

My only question is, has Mr. Gardner read the flight manual for the '51?!?

Maybe Mr. Terrell will chime in, but from what I remember, the maneuvers described by Mr. Hoover, are explained in the NAA P-51 pilots manual.

It's not unusual for old warbirds to hit snags like this from time to time.

I am reminded of a story I heard about a Spitfire display pilot returning from a show who wanted to stop at an airport to refuel. He hit the gear down lever and nothing happened, the gear was stuck up. After trying all the obvious things it occurred to him that the problem may lie in the 'up lock' pins, the device that keeps the gear locked in the 'up' position. He contacted the tower and asked for permission to do a low inverted pass while they checked to see if his gear deployed. He then rolled upside down which took the weight of the gear off the lock pins and this time when he activated the gear the lock pins retracted and the gear extended, upwards, and he got a green light in the cockpit and confirmation from the tower that the gear was extended. Then he just had to roll the right way up and do a circuit for a normal landing.
 
That sounds like a Neil Williams effort......remember his Zlin broken spar recovery back in the 50's or 60's?
