bullet strikes compared to cannon strikes

I noticed that the cannon rounds make more(as in number of) strike effects than MG rounds. I can make the MG's do that only by making them into cannon rounds in their XML. This makes them fire with the cannon trigger which is not a problem on Mustangs and T-Bolts. The problem is with all the planes that have cannon/MG combos like the Spitfire or P-38. Then there is no seperate triggers for the guns.

Is there a way to make the bullets(from MGs) act just like the shells(from cannons) without messing up or changing the trigger options?

Do you want the increased damage as well?
Well, not really...
From my testing, changing the "bullets" to "shells" in the XML didn't change the actual damage at all. It just looks a lot better when I'm strafing the ground and I see way more plooms of the dirt or water. You also see more strikes on vehicles and aircraft.

I've made all of my P-51s and P-47s MGs into shells so they not only look better, they also use the primary trigger, like a FW-190, Tempest, Typhoon,Vampire, Me-262, etc.

I've been doing the same thing with my shell and bullet rounds, never figured out why there were more shells being fired than bullet rounds. Almost seems like the designers of the game had this concept mixed up. I just reconfigured my X52 so that the trigger predominently shoots shell rounds (renamed in their xdp's as "bullet") and fire button "C" fires bullet rounds (renamed in their xdp's as shells)

The reason is simple, and will be obvious if you've ever shot at things a bit. Bullet hits don't go flash. De Wilde rounds do, but .303 ball and AP do not. As de Wilde ammunition (MkVI Incendiary) was not loaded as 100%, then you would not have 100% strike flashes. Depending on the period, supply availability and squadron customs, about 20 - 25 % of the load of .303 ammunition carried by RAF fighters would be of the Mk VI Incendiary type, the rest being ball or AP. The final squirt in each gun would often be solid tracer, to indicate that it was time to go home.

This doesn't really explain the hits to water(splashes) or dirt(plooms).
