Bush Pilots Racing League

The Bush Pilot's Racing League (BPRL) has just started its fourth race of the season, so if you like your flying "low and fast", and away from airports, you should check it out.

This month's race leaves Kodiak island (where the last race happened), and continues on at the southern tip of Alaska. It consists of five legs, and the overall length is about 225nm.

Four of the five stops are off-airport, so you have to be creative (and careful) when picking a landing spot. There are also altitude limitations in place, so finding a way through a mountain range can be a bit of a challenge.

But even if you're just looking for a nice scenic ride in gorgeous environments (instead of bare-knuckle racing), feel free to join. The race got some unique routes and challenges, that should appeal to all kinds of bushpilots!

The August race is now open!

It's taking place in the backwoods of Vancouver, BC (so if you have Orbx's Pacific Northwest region this is an opportunity to put it to good use).

The track leads through some steep and scenic valleys, and has a few challenges thrown in for good measure. There are two off-airport landings, a "how low can you go" leg, and a STOL landing (both optional, and can improve your race times).
The route is set up to allow the use of both land- and sea-planes, and is about 150nm long (split into 5 segments).

that looks like fun to me..but for some reason i seem to get overcome (over whelmed) when i start reading..and then im lost ...
 
As with any event a few rules are necessary, but we try to keep these to a minimum.

But there are just a few steps necessary to participate:

A) Preparing for participation to the BPRL :

1. Register (create an account) at the BPRL forum.
This is where the banter takes place.

2. Install FS-Duenna.
This is the race tracking software we use to log the participants' flights.
Install Full client + Update Rev 131.

3. Install GetWeather.
This is the program we currently use to allow all pilots to fly with the same weather.

B) Before each months' course :

Course descriptions are posted on the BPRL site https://sites.google.com/site/fsebprl/race-courses (pull-down menu) and announced at the forum.

1. Select an aircraft to fly the course.
Allowed aircraft: Single engine fixed-wing aircraft with piston-driven, naturally aspirated engines.
Aircraft configuration files must be "stock" - that is, no modifications to the developer's original .cfg or .air files are allowed to make the aircraft lighter, faster, etc. (exceptions to the "developer's original .cfg/.air" is when a publicly available modification is known and accepted, such as Bernt Stolle's many FDE modification).

Check whether this aircraft is already approved for the race. The full list of approved (or pending) aircraft is available as a Google Document here, and if you would like to have one added, please post the nomination here, or at the forum.

2. Register for the months' race course.
Link on the month' course page: "Not listed? Click here to register for this course!"
Enter pilot name and aircraft ID (AID# from the aircraft list).
You should be added to the list of pilots on the courses' page within latest a day or two, but you can fly the legs right away.

3. Download the GetWeather weather configuration file for the current months' course.
See at bottom of page here

C) Before flying a leg :

1. Start GetWeather and load the current months' weather configuration file.
Details here.

2. Start FS(9/X).
Configure FS settings as described in the "Flight Simulator Requirements" section here.

3. Load/refresh FS Real-world weather.
FSMenu: Environment - Weather - either static or 15 min update.
This will load the GetWeather weather into the sim.

4. Start FS-Duenna.
Confirm the FS and FS-Duenna settings are as described here (Duenna checks all green).
If you have checked "Arm baton auto-pickup" the race tracking will automatically start when you take off, and stop when you land.
Be sure to set "Event Name" to "BPRL 2013 Race" in the FS-Duenna settings page.

5. Fly the race leg.
Complete each run as fast as you can while adhering to the restrictions that are unique to each leg of the race.
Notes: You are allowed two tries for each leg, e.g. if you crash, or somehow mess up your first run.

6. Post a short pirep to the forum (optional).
We want to know about the adventures you had, and we want photos ! ;)
And this also lets us know that you have completed a leg (but we also see your flight on the FS-Duenna tracking site).

For all you P3D users I have provided Kronsky with some hints as to getting the Duenna to work in P3D. I won't give a cast iron guarantee it will work for you but it does for me.

If I can help then I will.

There short, quick and challenging. I love the off airport landings on the ground its quite fun.

Yeah, the first step might be the hardest, but just join us on the forum, and we'll try to walk you through, if you encounter any issues.
Most of us had never raced online, before joining BPRL, so we can relate... ;)
(Also, while your computer has to be online while you're racing, that's all that's required, i.e. no Vatsim, no FSInn, no TeamSpeak, etc. All you need is an Internet connection and Duenna, and you're ready to go.)

This race takes us to Idaho's scenic Frank Church River of No Return wilderness with a mix of backcountry airstrips as challenging as they get - with high altitudes, short runways, and some "dead-end" airports (which allow no second tries).
