C-17 sighting near KMFD

I spent 11 hours at my sis-in-law's house helping her with stuff....she had an outpatient surgery yesterday and has to take it easy for a week. While I was there, I heard the sound of a jet plane....an unusual sounding jet...very high pitch, very unlike 747s and the like. I bop outside, block the glaring sun from my eyes (got into the 90s here today...and that was in the shade!) and up in the sky was a C-17. Heading West with a bit of Northwest thrown in for good measure. Not on any approach to KMFD, just flying over on its way someplace else.

About 30 minutes later, I again heard the sound of a C-17. Looked up and there it was, heading in the direction of the first one. Or maybe it was the first one and it had come around just so I could look at it again....but I don't think it was.

Only the third time I have seen the C-17 in flight....the first time I saw one, I got to watch it take off from KMFD....from about 1/2 mile away....and man was it LOUD!

There's a small hillside area next to the runway at McChord AFB near the shadow of a C-124C. It's a great place to take lunch, stretch out on the grass and watch C-17's doing touch-n-go's right in front of you.

As loud as that is, watching them do a minimum distance landing in front of you can be painful but awesome.

Obio ,

My old unit at Wright Pat are suppose to be replacing their aged C-5's with 3 or 4 C-17's starting this year I believe . My next trip to the Museum I'll go check it out . The C-17 you saw could have been from anywhere . Quite a graceful bird isn't it ? Your right , the sound is something else .

I get to see C-17's everyday here in Dayton town, very loud birds when they fly over your house at 1000ft doing touch and go's at Wright Patterson AB..
I wish now I lived a bit further from the airbase, everyday there are many flights in and out of WPAB and rather loud..
Glad you got to see one, come on down to Dayton town and sit on my pouch and you can see your fill of them in a short amount of time..
