C-97

Actually the KC-97L was more common than one might think. Originally built by mechanics at the 128th ARW of the Wisconsin ANG (Milwaukee)in 1964, utilizing J-47 engines from KB-50 aircraft. It was assigned to Ohio, Wis, Il, and a number of other ANG units, along with the Spanish AF. There were 81 built.

OOPS! My old eyes saw those pods and "jet engine" just flashed through my mind. I failed to note the obvious: a jet engine has a big round hole front and back :)

Honestly though: I never saw a KC with wing tanks. With a full load of JP-4 and all the avgas we could load it was hard enough to get off the ground. Did those wing tanks replace some of the others?

The screenshot of the pilot's view does not show one. The co-pilot had a repeater of the navigator's APS-42 mounted above the windscreen center. It was nice to have when weather was nasty.
It wasn't what one would call a great radar but it was ok.

Interesting idea to say the least...and has that "peculiar" factor that would invite people to give it a try. Anxiously awaiting
the FSX model!

Each progress report reveals more and more KC-97 goodness! There is something about these a/c of the 50s and 60s that
catch the eye.
 
Hoping the regular C-97 is coming behind it soon! Tankers are fun but I am anxiously awaiting running cargo
 
UPDATE: Effects!

This is the latest stuff I'm working on. The soundset has been update also, but this video focus is on the startup effects.

These panels are beautiful. but the perspective is from the flight engineers position. I am assuming this is to give access to the whole of the main flight panel?
 
Indeed..

yes... ideally...the config can have pop-ups for close ups of the flying instrumentation...
I work on a canvas large enough at high definition... so it can be cropped to suit one's ideas...

UPDATE: Sound

Video shows panning around the aircraft while taxiing/takeoff and throttles set to climbing rate on flyby. Then cruise setting. Also cockpit sounds are now in stereo.

You know, I wasn't sure about this one, only because it didn't seem to suit my flying style. The C-47 does - I'm mainly a short-hauler. But there's something about the C-97 that makes me want to hack around in it (in contrast to the A2A 377, which always seemed to want to fly very serious, mainline passenger profiles). Not to sound ungrateful or impatient - I'm neither - but add my name to the list of those waiting for the freighter variant, which ought to be a perfect hacking-around ride. No rush but I'll be a happy camper when it gets here.
