The international orange is correct.

Howdy,

Bluff: the correct color for that period is AN633 / FS595 28913 “Fluorescent red-orange”

Some of the confusion is due to the color palate shift from ANA to FS595, which also included shade/color changes in some cases, particularly when the USAF moved away from florescent colors in the early 1970's. The markings in question are a variation of the arctic conspicuity markings, which started out as insignia red, became fluorescent red-orange, and then ended as international orange. For an excellent illustration of the three variations, just do a search for the USAF or Navy squadrons that operated in the arctic.

For the C-97, according to TO 1-1-4 dated 23APR64, the color was "Code 633", which is listed in ANA Bulletin 157/166 as "florescent red-orange." The ANA fluorescent colors were painted on top of a bright-white background, and produced that glowing orange appearance, which translated to FS595 28913. Look at photos of SAC KC-97s sitting in the snow and it is very obvious. Later, when the USAF migrated away from fluorescent markings, TO 1-1-4 was updated to FS595 12197, International Orange.

The C-47, C-97, and C-130 all wore all three at various phases, the C-135 only wore the Fluorescent and International Orange.

I will upload the fix asap.

And there is another unique C-97 Stratofreighter: VC-97D 45-59596. Based at Westover AFB. Completed as the sole YC-97B, later redesignated C-97B and in 1954 to C-97D VIP. The only C97B built with no rear loading doors and circular windows and luxury. Aircraft was in service until 1969.

Looking great, available soon I hope.....:very_drunk:

BTW, has anyone considered finishing the rest of the ANG KC-97 units. Granted they mostly flew "L" models, but I think the original G mods were initially used.

Both those last two look great:applause:

A huge proportion of pics showing '97's in the UK depict the L so I'll wait before putting up another paint suggestion.:biggrin-new:

Just finished 45-59596 and uploaded repaint in Lib. And I corrected a lot of things like the SAC banner, cabin heater coating etc.

The Talking Bird 0-10224 got a fix. It is in Lib too and availible soon.

Great, yes. I am also working on a high polish aluminium texture set of my 45-59596 repaint, too. In fact with no great success at the moment. In real, the fuselage, engines and wings of 59596 are much more polished like in repaint.

See a not common real picture of this rare bird, this one is really unique:

Wow, some airmen wore out their arms polishing that one! So that photo must be of a C97D, ex YC97B. S/N 55-59596 ? As an almost Stratocruiser they should have saved it for the Air Force museum. Great photo.

I'll bet their Flight Chief made them clean the Mother's Polish out of every auto parts store in Boston for that one.

Got my can of Never-dull out and started to polish it on my own.

I noticed that the black over the wing roots and tail section are not on the right side. Is that the way it is supposed to be?

AOD with shine

I tried to shine up JK's AOD a little to see if I could make a little difference with the bare aluminum reflection.
