CACTUS AIR FORCE........

Greetings all ! Just finished reading a book concerning the Cactus Air Force and its' day by day struggles against the Japanese forces on Guadacanal.. It is titled "53 Days on Starvation Island" by John R. Bruning. It tells of the missions, and the losses , along with the flight characteristics of the SBD's and the F4F's that they flew. Some here might find it a interesting read. I know I did.

Yep, a very good read. Those guys who first landed and fought in the early days were great heroes. How they managed to fly and survive is an awe inspiring story.

Hi Fibber,

I too am a Bruning fan. It may seem like the host are paying me (no, and they would'nt take it anyway) but Bruning is in two episodes of the "Unauthored History of the Pacific War" podcast of which I'm also a big fan.

One thing I've noticed through the years is if I like the way he/she speaks, I will problably like the writing as well. In Brunings case this has held true.

Incidentally, I gave my father a copy of his "Race of Aces" for Christmas. I'm on a limited budget but he promised to lend it to me when he was done:cautious: He never reads much but he said he can't put it down.

"Incidental not integral" - I always liked that quote but with me I'm afraid it's the latter. Dad and I - born AC fanatics.

I bought my son the book ''The Big E''.He's using it for his Enterprise missions,it also has a lot of pics of Enterprise thru the war.He also found a PDF of the book.

We also have a film of CV-8 Hornet from the Doolittle until it was torpedoed by USN Destroyers to sink it so it wouldn't fall into enemy hands. Some of this film was taken by late husbands' Uncle who served on the Hornet until she was sunk.

We also have actual film of the attack on Midway and the US planes taking off from Midway to attack the Japanese Fleet.

Ali; :wavey: I saw the book "Race for Aces' in a library download for Kindles and other devices. If you have a library convenient to you obtain a card and set up a account. I use "Libby" and a new one called "Hoop-la' takes some hunting but the books are there. FYI, especially on a limited budget as I am also.

Fibber, that I had more thumbs I'd give that tip many likes.

Thanks, I'll check it out

Mike

That first You-Tube video seemed just a bit slow and verbose to me.
Bruning was on topic but the same can't be said for the two regulars.

Anyone notice that the tall pilot in the second screenshot is Capt. Charles Lindbergh?
