I have just completed the missions flown from Aug 20 1942 to Oct 3 1942 flown by VMF223.The number of fighter aircraft SBDs TBFs and P-400 that were on the field at any given time are as close as I can figure the correct number of aircraft including the ones damaged. All the missions are fighter missions and reflect the mission type flown by VMF223.VMF223 was assigned to protect Henderson Field at all cost They didn`t fly any escort missions that I could find nore did the do any ground support work. The escort missions were flown by the P-400s as well as all the ground attack and ground support work. Most of the time the SBDs went out unescorted.By Aug 30th VMF223 was down to 8 flyable aircraft out of 19 that landed,VMSB232 was down to about the same number of SBDs and the P-400s were down to three out of 14 aircraft. On Aug 30th VMF224 with 19 more F4Fs and VMSB 233 with 12 more SBDs landed.By Sept 11 VMF223 was down to 5 aircraft and VMF224 had about 6.On Sept 11th VF5 landed with 24 F4Fs along with 12 more SBDs and then the aircraft from Enterprise landed wit 19 more F4F 8TBFs and 12 more SBDs.This is the way it went from Aug to the 1st part of Oct. when VMF223,VMF224, and VF5 were releived. The missions flown by VMF223 were intercept missons only other then CAP untill VF5 landed. VF5 took over flying CAP and did some escort work as well as intercept along with VMF223 and VMF224.All the missions are intercept missions flown by VMF223 accept for one and that is the mission on Oct11 1942 when VMF223 left Guadalcanal for the last time. Here are two pics two pics of them just after arriving at Espiritu Santos on Oct 11.
