I'm in the market for an ultra-compact digital camera. Any recommendations on one that boasts great value for price?
 
I'm interested in some opinions to. Using mostly video these days but a dedicated small modern camera would be good also for close ups.
 
My wife got me an awesome Panasonic Lumix for Christmas. It's got anti-shake, takes really nice video and incredible photos. I'm not sure what model it is- I forgot it at work. A quick look at the website revealed the price isn't bad either.
 
The main thing is not to be pursuaded to buy anything because of the amount of MegaPixels!
A good lens and sensor are are most important.
Nice to have at least 8 MP though, and a memory card to be able to store your pictures.
The internal memory, even on higher priced cameras, is usually very limited.
As Railrunner said, the Lumix is very good for daily use, but there are so many other options, and I can imagine everybody coming up with one...!
 
As a grab n' go camera, I have the Kodak Easyshare Z885. 8.1 megapixels, 5x optical zoom. You can also store all your pictures on microSD cards.
The camera takes awesome pictures- it's around the $200 and up range.
 
I have a Nikon Coolpix L20 that I usually carry around with me in my pocket. People wonder why I always carry it, then something cool happens and I'm the only one getting decent pics!
 
I had a great canon mini, the lens extension mechanism broke, and I replaced it with a cheaper fuji. No comparison, picswise. :-/

Next time, canon for sure, much better light/color sensors and snap-timing.
However, buy the extended warranty.
 
I've been a loyal Canon shooter since I got my Canon FT 35mm in 1971. My digital cam is a Canon PowerShot A550, 7.1 megapixel. Does everything for me except make coffee. :d You really can't go wrong with any models in the PowerShot line.
 
I once saw a review which started with: "You have digital cameras made by computer companies and you have digital cameras made by companies who already made analog cameras.
When you want to have a camera which works like a computer by one made by a computer company. If you want a camera buy one from a company which knows how to make cameras."

I have had a Sony and now use a Nikon. I prefer the last one.

If I was to buy a Point and Shoot right now, it would be the Canon S90. Maybe I am just biased since I own a Canon T2i Dslr :wiggle:

Oh and if you are willing to get a slightly bigger point and shoot, go for the Canon G11. It is not ultra compact but it is an outstanding camera.
 
Some of these little cameras have a far superior red eye remover built into them....I have a pretty good Canon IXUS 70 mni camera. Some of the later models have a better red eye remover and a better face detector.
 
I have two. Both the same pocket sized. I highly recommend them both.

CASIO EX-V7 : has many things to recommend it, but one of the best is that it has 7x Optical zoom for which the mechanics are all internal to the camera- there is no lense that extends and retracts back into the camera housing. Takes great pictures. It isn't the latest version of this camera but you can probably still find perfectly good refurbished models at places like Adorama and Cameta.

CANON S-90: More expensive than the Casio. Takes superb SLR quality pictures. The S-90 isn't the latest version of this camera- the S-95 recommended by Panther is. But this camera is totally fine and you should still be able to find it new and refurbished at places like Adorama, Cameta and even Amazon- for less money.
